About Me

Joel Selvin, Music critic for the San Francisco Chronicle writes: ************************************************************ **** “…visually the focus rests on Kathleen Mary Maguire, the stunning lead vocalist whose athletic, sexy dancing gives the throbbing music a physical counterpoint. On songs like “If Streets could Talk,” "Too Much Fun,” and “African Disco Dub,” Maguire breathed fury and fire into the lyrics of John Tompkins, the band’s songwriting collaborator since its inception last year". (Bay area World music band, “Big City”11/5/84) ************************************************************ ***"Big City was my introduction into the World music arena, sparking my interest in rhythms and languages, which I have had the opportunity to explore and develop. After deciding to leave the band to refine my style, I moved deeper into the world of Polyrythmic music. My ear for harmony, ability to sing in different languages and styles combined with a commanding stage presence has taken me around the world touring, recording and composing with artists from several countries in Africa, the UK and the West Indies. I am currently working on my first solo CD, a kaleidescope of all my experiences in World music, with lyrics focused on spirituality, inspiration, healing and love.
