Phil Collins's interests apart from music are painting (water colour), collecting all things to do with the famous event in American history known as THE ALAMO, boating and recently, golf .
Phil has met and played with most of his heroes throughout his amazing musical career spanning almost 40 years! People such as Paul Mc Cartney/ other Beatles, The Who, The Action, Robert Plant, Tony Bennet, Eric Clapton etc.Check the blog section for an extensive list of artists Phil has contributed/produced/performed and recorded with (apart from Genesis).
Phil Collins is well known for being the drummer and then singer of British Rock Band GENESIS which he joined in 1971, as drummer. in 1976, as singer Peter Gabriel had left, Phil moved from the drums to the mic, as no one suitable had been found to replace Peter and Phil had a natural talent and voice, which is heard on a lot of backing vox on the albums Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Since 1981, Phil embarked on a parallel solo career opened by a magnificent album , FACE VALUE, which took everyone by surprise, in terms of the accomplished and fresh song writing, emanating from a drummer! Phil's success rose to stratospheric heights in the mid to late 80's and 90's when he became a household name, almost eclipsing Genesis! Since then, even though Phil might not be in the main focus of the entertaining world anymore, he still nevertheless tirelessly works on many projects, such as his Big Band, started in 1996, his co-oporations with Disney winning him an Oscar in 1999 for his song writing in the animated film Tarzan. He also contributed to the soundtrack of Brother Bear, another Disney animated film (and sadly the last hand drawn one) and entirely wrote the music for the Tarzan Broadway Musical. But Phil is first and foremost an outstanding DRUMMER, who pushed the boundaries of drum sound production with producer Hugh Padgham, and the result was "That Phil Collins sound": the huge sounding gated reverb snare drum which was copied to death all along the 80's, as well as the famous "barking toms" sound coming from his concert toms! (single headed toms). Phil is currently rehearsing with fellow Genesis band mates for the upcoming tour kicking off in June. Genesis had been in hiatus since 1996 after Phil had left ( they did one more album and tour with singer Ray Wilson, of Stiltskin fame in 1998), but Phil re-joined in 2007 and they embarked on the extremely successful TURN IT ON AGAIN tour which took them to Europe (in June-July) and North America (in September-October). Phil is currently taking some time off to spend with his children, but is still active in various part time projects, such as being a member of the judges panel for the Tarzan musical casting talent show in Germany.
