Material: Ten Count Junky manage to do the impossible. They deliver a fresh, intense and original twist on the Seattle sound, popularized by Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Ten Count Junky’s material slices open the scarred-over wounds those acts left behind, and lets the blood flow again. The remarkable thing, however, is how Ten Count Junky improve upon those famous groups rather than simply emulating them. Instead, TCJ present something that’s new, inventive and way more dangerous.
Musicianship: These are excellent players. Each and every one of them could be a standout –– in another band. Together, this foursome is more like a super group. Kardes and Russo are a spot-on rhythm section –– tough, determined and tight. Flores is brilliant as he brings the sound into another realm. And Nathanael Lew –– well, there are hardly enough adjectives to describe him. But, if Kurt Cobain were alive today, he would be a fan.
Performance: Although each player was compelling in his own right, Lew was incredible. Seemingly possessed, he appeared to be exorcizing his demons. Completely immersed in every song, he projected an emotional intensity that has not been seen since Cobain’s unplugged performance on MTV. Lew is a dynamic artist who did more than command attention –– he made it impossible to look away.
Summary: If Ten Count Junky are ignored by the music industry, it will be a loss for music lovers everywhere. Given a chance they could bring something new –– and long overdue –– to the rock paradigm. Labels should take note, and anyone interested in the future of rock should take in a show.
