My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Long-lost friends, new friends, people who do things I wanna do (swim with dolphins, go to Sundance film festivals), and Ghyslain Raza, because he's my people.

Music:

Anything by Bill Miller.

Movies:

"Out of Africa," "Skins," "When Harry Met Sally," "Never Cry Wolf," "Talk to Me," "The Illusionist," "Dead Man Walking," "My Neighbor Totoro," "Castaway," "Team America: World Police," "The Incredibles," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Gattaca," "Being John Malkovich," "Thelma and Louise," "Fiddler on the Roof," "Office Space," "Tokyo Pop," "Contact," "The Road Home," a number of Star Trek movies, "This is Spinal Tap," the original Star Wars trilogy, "You Can Count On Me," "Noises Off!," "Godfather 1 & 2," "Strictly Ballroom," "Stranger Than Fiction," a bunch of Woody Allen movies, "House of Sand," "Brokeback Mountain," "Thunderheart," "Walking and Talking," "Dr. Zhivago," "Beavis and Butthead Do America" (so sue me), "The New World," "Dragon: the Bruce Lee Story," "Whale Rider," "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?"...the list goes on.... There are some actors (like the phenomenal Cate Blanchett ) whose movies I don't watch over and over, and some movies (like "Grave of the Fireflies," "Memento" or "Salaam Bombay" ) that I can't bear to, so they're not included in this list of faves. Movies in bold denote women directors: rarer than you might think!

Television:

Don't watch television, but I'm making an exception for "Heroes!"

Books:

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Sherman Alexie His Dark Materials trilogy Phillip Pullman To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee, Tony Hillerman mysteries, the James Herriot series, The Name of the Rose Umberto Eco The Good Earth Pearl S. Buck, J.K. Rowling's series, Blink Malcolm Gladwell and The Lathe of Heaven Ursula LeGuin

Heroes:

Jimmy Carter. The Dalai Lama (winner of Congressional Medal of Honor, 10-17-07), Albert Einstein, Bill Miller, and congratulations to SHERMAN ALEXIE for the recent National Book Award!

Impediments to Pizza

A week ago, I dropped by my brother's house with 6 bottles of cold beer and 2 cans of pink lemonade.  I'd been playing tag with my sis-in-law and her visiting niece, and thought I'...

He Did NOT Just Say That!

New friend Sootie has an anecdote in her blog today about a time she grilled dinner for a well-to-do friend, and he recoiled from using ketchup out of the bottle.  "Don't you have anything l...

A Silenter Night Than Planned

I wasn't feeling well enough to go to work on Friday the 14th, and somewhere over the weekend developed complete laryngitis.  I've been without a voice since then, and I'm starting to wonder if i...
