BLEEDING HEARTS POLITICS AND LOVE 2006 ALBUM REVIEWS
This album has a certain charm from the moment you press play. The sound of an old vinyl jukebox introduces the first song, The War On Terror. This song hints at the political bias present in several tracks on the album, but doesnt prepare you for the folk-rock that follows. Patriotic Crap the second track continues the political theme and is replete with comedic England football chants, violins and crashing Rock. At this point it is not clear whether bleeding Hearts are serious musicians or political minstrels.
Fear Of The Dark goes some way to indicate the bands efforts are worthwhile in terms of music and lyrical ideas. Strong rhythmic Bodhran drumming underpins the semi-acoustic vibe of this song. One of the highlights of the album Bones In The Cupboard has some quite fast rock augmenting well with jaunty fiddle playing and a really catchy chorus of never judge a book by its cover. Midway through Politics and Love, Sex and Understanding the weight of great tunes certainly outweighs any doubt about their ability to engage the listener, and although some of the lyrics are political, they never become preachy.
Bleeding Hearts music is similar in style to that of the Levellers and New Model Army, in essence contemporary folk tinged Rock. Love Is Someplace else a power ballad that conjures up thoughts of manic Street Preachers, has some really nice vocal harmonies. On Stupid People the band introduce a punk edge to good effect, with the singer snarling through the song like a dead ringer for John Lydon. Palestine starts off with a stripped down one man and his guitar arrangement and slowly builds to an enjoyable if brief Pink Floydian crescendo. Bleeding Hearts strike a nice balance between folk and rock, taking elements of both to capture the songs in harmony. This studio album has all the excitement of a live gig, but has the advantage of being tighter and sounding clearer. Between some of the tracks snippets of dialogue can be heard which are sometimes humorous and at times poignant, (i.e. Tony Benn is asked what can we do? to which he states the first thing to do is to understand what is happening) help to make Politics and Love, Sex and Understanding more than just a collection of songs. Several songs have socio-political lyrics but they are more questioning in content and never overshadow the music.
This Bleeding Hearts album clocks in at over an hour, and pleasingly the sheer musical focus stops it from being simply another folk-rock band rehashing old standards. Fun, poignant and made in the Black Country, so if you fancy something to get your feet tapping and your mind ticking then check out Politics and Love, Sex and Understanding, its more than just a group of Bleeding Hearts.
Ryans Gig Guide
One of the most original releases I have heard in a long time, this BLEEDING HEARTS from the UK. This band is mixing 80s melodic rock, classic late 70s Oi/Punk and Irish Folk music into a very exciting catchy sound. This band might attracts fans of SKYCLAD, CROWDED HOUSE, GOLDEN EARRING, DROPKICK MURPHYS and any melodic rockfan, so a very diverse audience. I guess the best comparison for BLEEDING HEARTS just has to be the legendary band BIG COUNTRY or IT BITES, because BLEEDING HEARTS is playing in a similar style, combining catchy choruses, melodic vocals, violins and classic rock n roll guitars into an up-tempo punky melodic rock-sound. Songs like Patriotic crap, Anxiety, Politics and love and Bad choices are really catchy songs that you cant ignore liking. The band has a strong political view as well and because of their original sound, the 3rd CD of them could well give them a breakthrough.

You know, I really like these guys! They are masters of their own sound which is something certainly worth attempting to describe. Essentially a rock band with well intelligent and inspiring lyrics, the style ranges from quality rock anthems to beautiful folkish ballads, with raw vocals, violins and guitars, they truly have defined their own style, and the rhythm section just gels it all together quite well. I really like this stuff, its warming and inviting and grows on you more and more with every listen, the songs really get into your head and dont wanna leave! Would really like to see, and would even dare to say, expect, great things for this band. Keep rockin guys!!!

I first would like to begin by giving you all major cudos on the cover because it is VERY different and VERY creative. I have seen A LOT of cds but nothing compares to this cd. Next, the lyrics do not beat around the bush, they are VERY straight to the point (which is always good). I love how you all were very creative with the numbers going down the side. This cd really blows me away. GREAT JOB and WELL DONE! I also want to say that it was VERY VERY hard for me to pick just one or two favorite songs on here. However, after dwelling on an decision, my favourite songs are: "Something Good 2day" and "Love Is Someplace Else" because I can REALLY relate to them. I want to tell you all that this cd is so amazing and I want a new one soon." "So my question to you is......... "When are you going to get back in the studio again?" and when are you all going to do a show for us in the U.S.A.? This cd is VERY well put together and is down to earth." "This cd portrays one of the BEST out there. Everything I review will always compare to this cd. That is saying ALOT!!!! There are no words or any other criticizing I can do." "JUST AMAZING!!!"
