Milan Lad is most definitely the undisputed champion of the understatement. In fact his calm, relaxed yet firm persona wouldn't be ruffled even in a force 12 hurricane. He is a remarkable and exceptional Bradfordian with the power to express his craft within the subtle and breathtaking realms of what we call world music, jazz, acid jazz or whatever you care to prefer.
It is for these reasons that "Dreams", released in the hot lazy summer of 1995 remains high on my list of favourite albums. Consequently, his current project "Sangam", though long overdue, is a continuation and maturation of his mastery in understatement without any loss of clarity, focus or style. Born in Bradford in June 1968 Milan has passion, spirit and enthusiasm for creating music of the highest calibre. He has been playing the guitar since his days at school and developed a keen interest in jazz and jazz fusion. Playing around venues and festivals in the UK he meticulously honed his craft and writing abilities culminating in the release of his "Dreams" album. It seems natural and almost inevitable therefore that "Sangam" is a step forward, a reflection of his own personal development and philosophical outlook on life itself. His music is an attempt to break down the barriers between people using a blend of influences from RnB, jazz, acoustic, dance and ethnic Indian classical. This is immediately evident through his choice of musicians and collaborators reflecting a wide diversity of ethnicity. As an artist, Milan explores these genres whilst never denying his own Indian cultural heritage, which he believes has a mutual relationship in the scheme of things. It's not by chance that Sangam is the Hindi word meaning "together."
