about (written by pipi k.k.)
Morthen was born in the year 1982, supposedly on the sounds of New Order's
"Blue Monday" [I recall Morthen hearing this track some years ago and he seemed to remember it from somewhere]. Morthen grew up in Maldegem, Belgium, where his passion for music started at a very early age. Just turning 4 years young, you could find the kid sitting in the grass, listening to the rhythmic moaning of the cows that surrounded him. This was his first encounter with what people like to call IDM today. Morthen not only likes cows, but also pigeons, forklifts, suitcases and 17 year old boys having german sounding dj names (I'm not entirely sure on the last one).
Morthen and his best friend in elementary school Willem, now a member of the infamous Silvester Anfang funeral folk collective, started discovering true techno and rave music at an age of 11. Compilations such as Electro Sounds, Turn Up The Bass and Serious Beats were their favourites, containing tracks in the likes of Rhythim is Rhythim's 'Strings Of Life' and Reese's 'Colour of Love' (and also a lot of euro dance crap... haha).
And next? Well... During a trip to Prague (M. was 17 then), Willem (once again - he's a true musical innovator!) turned up with some secret tapes containing live recordings of the I Love Techno party in 1999. The mixes were from Laurent Garnier, Jeff Mills and Sven Väth and were one after the other simply marvellous! The start of a love for true techno and house and all things in life that are sweet.
From 2000 on we find MK behind the turntables himself, focussing on the
deeper and more soulful side of techno and house. Between 2000 and 2006 he
mainly focused on collecting vinyl, sometimes flying to London for buying
rare original pressings of classic tunes at the Reckless or MVE stores in
the Soho district. His passion for this classic sound,
in combination with the required technical skills, resulted in a double
performance on the "Switch" show on the national radio station Studio
Brussel in 2007 where two of his classics mixes were broadcasted.
In the same year he regained his interest in todays electronic
music and moved his focus from collecting records to performing, inspired by his biggest dj influences Ron Hardy (R.I.P.) and Derrick May. With an updated playlist, combining the best of the present with landmark dance tracks of the past, MK participated to the Studio Brussel 2007 dj contest. His demo survived till the last selection round.
In the beginning of 2008 MK’s monthly “Feel This Funk†dj mix series took off. The aim of these series is blending energetic, deep and soulful dance music. Providing a mixture of quality and fine crafted tracks, rather than easy and cheesy stuff. Putting the soul back in the music! The sets are distributed via the web and on CD-r in small quantities (ask for info).
Also on the level of producing, Morthen developed his own unique sound.
Lo-fi slow and deep house tracks that have this special funky feeling to
them. In the autumn of 2008 we expect his vinyl debut on a quality underground label featuring a more dubby affair.
