Country Songs from Godless Country

About Me

..John Henry Olthoff is a country and folk singer-songwriter currently living in the very nice Queens, NY neighborhood of Jackson Heights. Some time after mastering the fine art of referring to himself in the third person, he wrote this: He has a small kitchen but a big heart. And a big mouth. Most Monday nights, he can be seen hollering, yodeling, and banging on his guitar in front of an occasionally shocked audience at The Red Lion on Bleecker St. in NYC's Greenwich Village. Other nights, he's out teaching math and science to Adult Education students. Or sleeping. Send him a message, or a comment, or be his friend. He's starved for attention.Oh, and by the way, his song "Buick Skylark" and "Broken Toy" were both named Finalists in 2007's Song of the Year Contest (www.songoftheyear.com).So what did you do for Christmas vacation?

Sounds Like: Sounds like I only know how to use one track to record on my digital recorder. Actually, sounds a lot better than that now, if I do say so myself, thanks to the guys at Casa Nova Studios, but really, how would you expect a schoolteacher in Jackson Heights playing country music to sound?

Flamingo Dancer

So I'm killing time before I have to go and teach my Adult Education math class.  The other week, in one of my classes, this happened: I read a question having to do with probability.  It we...

Attention Seekers Blues

Here’s a new song that I recorded today.  It’s kind of about me, exaggerated, hyperbolated, truth-stretcherated.  If any of you out there are wearing skinny pants and Converse, ...

Childish Things

So I finally finished this thorn-in-my-side of a song, and here’s a very rough, too-long demo I just recorded in one take on my sofa.  Country music is not usually the medium in which you&...

So a letter comes in the mail.  It's junk mail, a solicitation from Vonage, the digital phone company.  This is not strange--we get lots of crap in the mail.  Only this letter is ...
