About Me
Jahnigen was born January 30th, 1960 at UCLA, yes, an actual LA boy!
He spent his early childhood deep in the counter culture of the 60's in Hollywood, the Haight and Topanga, where he was witness to much history of the day, soaking up the life of film and music. (cue Black Orpheus, A Man and A Woman, Jobim and Woodstock here) Being given the gift of the arts from the beginning he started his art career selling drawings in the Troubador and Barney's Beanery (Barney was like a Granddad before he died) as fast as he could create them. He spent his teen years in Santa CruzDONOTBLOCKOURADS body surfing, sailing and soaking up sun. (cue Loggins & Messina, Pink Floyd, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Neil Larsen, Todd Rundegrun and Weather Report here)In 1980 he walked onto the Royal Viking Sky, a norwegian cruise ship in port in San Francisco, started asking how to get a job on board, not knowing they were one crewman short, got hired on the spot and left that night on 4 year adventure that followed Summer around the world 5 times. Instead of college he worked along side a crew of 35 nationalities, breathed and tasted deeply of the spices and perfumes of people and places.(cue Evita, Michael Franks, Joe Jackson, Pat Metheny and Pharoah Sanders here)He then made the obvious decision to spend the next 5 years above the Arctic Circle in Norway. (cue Jan Garbarek, Keith Jarret, Terje Rypdal, Nana Mouskuri, Charles Aznavour and Gilbert Becaud here)There he produced concerts and hosted a jazz program on local radio. He believes everyone should see the midnight sun and the moon at noon. Seeing the sun make its first rise in the spring and feeling its sacred heat after months of absence removes all doubt as to how people understood the sun as a god.It was during one of the long frosty arctic nights while producing a concert for John Mayall that he met Walter Trout, John's then prodigy guitarist. Now mind you, John is responsible for having only the best play for him, just ask Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Mick Taylor just to name a few. Eventually, Walter went on his own and Tim came back home. His two beautiful daughters, Anne Karenina, and Tatjana Nevenke, who are now in their 20's, still live there but come to visit.Backing up a bit, (cue Jimmy Hendrix, Santana and David Axelrod here) as a child Tim was always drawn to writing but didn't know the difference between poetry and lyrics. Somehow, when Walter was thinking outloud about needing material for a new album, Tim had an idea and Walter liked it. It became a hit for Walter in europe called "Say Goodbye to the Blues" in 1990, and as fate would have it, in a national poll in The Netherlands in 2006, "Say Goodbye to the Blues" was voted number one of the top fifty blues songs of all time, they're still working on a follow up hit. Most stories have twists and turns (cue theme to Somewhere in Time, Jaws, The Godfather and The Mission) and this is no different. So after moving to LA again and having great success building a career as an actor without an agent and building momentum in film and music, he appeared in among others, Sliver, Forest Gump and I'll Do Anything, he then made the logical choice to go unconcious while things fell apart. He woke up one day in Fayetteville Arkansas bereft of all possessions and all things familiar and decided not to leave until he figured out how he got there.(cue the soundtrack to Deliverance and The Matrix here)Threads were spun and woven, light and lies, pleasures and pains. Stains were washed and colors added for beauty and depth. A vivid tapestry came of it and it is now strong and indelible. Once it was his only shelter, then it was hung on the wall for all to see, now it rests in a safe and protected place only for occasional viewing.(cue Shirley Horn, Charlie Haden, Burt Bacharach, Michael Tomlinson, more Pat Metheny, Paolo Conte and Mozart and Haydn)When you've been given a gift and a purpose, it will always remain. Even if you don't know what it is yet, you can hear knocking at your door and not answer because you might be afraid, distracted or stuck on the toilet. But thank God for God, because God is Love and God is patient and keeps knocking, but steadily louder(cue The Sex Pistols, Sting, Shawn Colvin, Jimmy Webb, Segio Mendes, Andy Williams)In 2000, while still living in Arkansas but on business in California Tim found the Love Of His Life. He first met Lisa Tarver when they were both 16, she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen and he was not worthy. For him it was Love at first sight, it was exactly the same for Lisa but it took her 25 years to figure it out.(cue The Look of Love, The Way We Were, Reunited, the theme from Romeo and Juliet and We Can Work It Out)Before he could plan a move back to California Lisa had a near fatal horseback riding accident and he jumped a flight to SFO. While changing planes in Dallas other things changed. He got on the flight with a man who looked familiar but he couldn't place him at first. Half way through the flight he realized the man was one of his heroes (cue the theme to The Magnificent Seven, Jeff Beck's Wired and Thus Sprach Zarathustra) it was Narada Michael Walden, who he had followed since his days with the Mahavishnu Orchestra and had his solo albums in the mix. Tim decided it was not the right place to say hello, not wanting to disturb the quiet of the night flight, he thought he might say hello as he got off but with the rush and all it wasn't going to work, he thought he might just tell his friends about who he saw and leave it at that.As he picked up his bag amidst the chaos of the carousel he stepped back on someone's foot and turned to say "sorry" and who was it but none other than Narada himself. He said outloud, "OK, now I'm talking to you" he said "I may be wrong and you may have heard this before, but you look just like this guy named Narada Michael Walden" at which Narada smiled and without a word reached in his bag and handed Tim a business card with his name on it. After Tim rattled off a quick sketch of Narada's entire career, from The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report and Jeff Beck to Aretha, Whitney, Barbra and Mariah, Narada then extended a very unexpected invitation to stop by his legendary studio for a tour and a "maybe we'll write a song together"Our first track was for Wynonna Judd, it was called "This Bough Won't Break", though it didn't end up being recorded it was a real gas that it was even a possibility.Tim got Lisa out of the hospital and took care of her while she recoverd from a severe brain injury, (She's mostly fine now except sometimes she can be as loopy as Tim) eventually he moved his things out to the coast, wrote songs with Narada and married the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen, who still was, and is, with Narada as his best man. Together they have 4 children, his daughters and her sons Tomas, 17, and Alex, 14.(cue Henri Salvador, Narada's Music, Greenday, Alison Kraus, Eric Bibb, Brian Kennedy, Alanis and Joni's Both Sides Album along with more Beethoven, Mozart, Weiss, Haydn)As Narada was given a name, he gave Tim a name. He named him the Staff Captain. Because of Tim's global seafaring days Narada learned that on a large ship there are two captains, the one that is seen and gives orders and one that is behind the scene, who carries them out. An apt moniker.(cue the theme to The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, Mutiny On The Bounty and Love Boat)Those two blessings, among the infinite others, brought much healing and action.(cue "Gonna Fly Now" from Rocky and anything else you might like)Among other things, and in another direction, Tim and his wife have invented the first Infrared Therapy Device for all cats, dogs and household pets. It is called the Fauna Sauna, it is a nondrug therapy for any aches, pains, inflammation, allergies and infections that animals get and improves their metabolism and absorbtion of proteins during digestion.Radiant heat is the natural heat of the sun, not the ultraviolet, and is the same wavelength that all living things give off and absorb for optimal health. Vets are excited, UC Davis is using the units and studies are being considered.Narada has blessed Tim with much trust and music. He chose Tim to help him coordinate his role as the Musical Director for Sting and Trudie's Rain Forest Concerts held at Carnegie Hall, there Tim has had the sublime honor of working with many of the legends of the industry and he has helped with coordinating sessions for the soundtrack of the upcoming film "The Guitar Man" that Narada is producing.Tim is a lyricist and has contributed alone and as a team to tracks on various projects including Narada's own new project coming out soon. Tim is eternally grateful to Walter Trout for making sure that he got paid for their first song and all the grace and blessings that that has brought.Tim has concluded that he is "more idiot than savant" and is "just happy to be here".He has also realized that mistakes are never mistakes unless you leave them that way and that mystery and change are the only things that never change.(cue Duke Ellington, Johnny Mandel, Egberto Gismonti, Nana Vasconcelos, Ketil Bjornstad, Dana Hanchard, Jackie Gleason, Jim Chappel, Donovan, Stevie Wonder and Thelonius Monk)The best is yet to come.
