STRAIGHT LOGIC
Engaging, Erudite, Enigmatic. In an environment where Hip-Hop is characterized by excess and material gain, these words are seldom used (truthfully) to describe today’s rap artists. In a little over two decades, rap music has transformed from its roots as a voice for the corporations surrounding it. Yet still, amongst a commercial wasteland of money, cars, and “Bling Bling†emerges a prodigy whose message reveals clairvoyance beyond his years.
The music created by 21 year-old Logic Makoto is the very embodiment of the aforementioned words. Precocious and politically driven, his work is on par with some of today’s best conscious rap artists. At the tender age of 11, Logic began honing his craft by participating in schoolyard rap battles with his peers. Hungry for knowledge, this artist was influenced by adept minds such as Malcolm X, Noam Chomsky, and Dr. Malachi York; musical influences include the likes of Public Enemy, Canibus, Tupac Shakur, Marvin Gaye, Sade, and Nas. As a result, his music incorporates original skill with dense layers of social commentary, punctuated by passion and unique sound.
Amidst the smog of vapid, mass-marketed artists, Logic is truly a breath of fresh air. Linguistically proficient, this rapper has cultivated his very own personal parlance (I.e. “Logical Slang Talkâ€). This gives his music the unique signature the fans crave and adversaries envy. He creates music that is genuine and organic: an immaculate synthesis of his spiritual beliefs and personal experiences. Growing up in a variety of different environments (Malton, Scarborough, Rexdale, Brampton) Logic was able to gain the experiences that are the unifying thread of his music. Spiritually he is an amalgamation of many beliefs, namely Buddhism and Christianity. These beliefs have guided him and brought him to a place of self-actualization. Now a mature and confident young man, Logic unlike other rappers is less concerned with material wealth, and is more focused on the wealth gained from being a role model. With any luck, his music will be the razor blade that cuts across all class and colour lines.
