We are students from the William S. Hart District's YES I CAN program. The class combines special education students with a wide spectrum of disorders with general education mentors. We spend the year learning about various disabilities, self advocacy, goal setting, self determination, team work, and teen issues. We spend the majority of the second semester utilizing our skills and working towards the common goal of throwing a district-wide concert.The majority of our students with special needs have a form of Autism known as Asperger's Syndrome. Although often gifted academically, a major area of deficit is the ability to socialize and communicate with peers. This is why it is essential to provide our class the opportunity to challenge ourselves to work together and practice the techniques we’ve been taught through the program.The costs of producing the concert are high and are generally covered through year-long class fund-raising, sponsorships, grants, and help from the community.
Over the past five years, local businesses have contributed donations, gift certificates, or sponsorships. These have helped us book the talent and cover all demands in the artists’ rider. Three years ago SMILE EMPTY SOUL returned to their SCV hometown and headlined our event; two years ago, we had legendary mega stars, FISHBONE who rocked the crowd with their renowned mix of SKA, funk, and hip-hop style; last year we were graced with the funky high-energy rock and hip-hop sound of Arizona's PHUNK JUNKEEZ. And this year we were blessed with TRAPT and a drum circle led by Stephen Perkins!!! All of these amazing acts donated their time and talent to play for our cause of Autism Awareness and Social Inclusion.
In the past, donations and sponsorships included: KROQ, Command Audio, The Milken Family Foundation, Wilbur Curtis Beverages, Andy Gump, Monster Energy Drink, No Limit America, Distraction Threads, Higher Level Productions, the City of Santa Clarita, and other local businesses. Their assistance helped provide concert shirts, backstage passes, security, staging, sound/lighting, and food for the Yes I Can students. Many of us have also donated countless hours of our personal time to communicate with sponsors and organize fundraisers, yet we still find ourselves short of our goals.
If you are able to assist or to make a contribution to this very worthy cause (in any way), please know that you will be doing a good thing for some really good teens who are trying to throw a really good event to help make our community and our world a friendlier place to be.
