Smile Empty Soul, the band that wouldnt die!
Smile Empty Soul returns stronger & smarter than ever and ready to take their rightful place as one of alt rocks kings. Equal parts hardcore, punk, metal and melody, this Southern California band doesnt shy away from any topic or pull any punches. Boldly going forth lyrically where even Captain James Kirk himself would fear to tread, Sean Danielsens lyrics take on politics, drugs, the corporate emasculation of the music industry even the high holy of capitalism, Wal-Mart.
Soaring melodically at times, then rapidly descending into lyrical despair not unlike a Roger Waters nightmare, their new CD Vultures shows Smile Empty Soul at its brightest and best. After reaching the heights of the music biz with their ..1 single Bottom Of A Bottle in 2004, the band went on to play over 250 shows packing venues from coast to coast.
Gold record firmly in one hand and metallic testicles in the other, the band went about offending some fairly powerful people at some of our countrys most influential Christian Fundamentalist groups. This resulted is a 30,000 piece mail campaign that left Warner Music Group and some of its top shareholders quaking in their 5th Avenue hunting boots. To make matters worse, a corporate shuffle left the band without their core supporters and feeling like the proverbial red headed step child.
With tensions mounting, accusations hurled, threats of violence and, even worse, lawsuits, Smile Empty Soul regained their freedom; a glorious emancipation, with balls and artistic credibility fully intact.
Smile Empty Soul, which was now Sean and bassist Ryan Martin, added a new member to the line up, drummer Jake Kilmer of the band The Flipper Babies.
The rejuvenated and reinvented three-piece decided to wave goodbye to the leech-like atmosphere of the major system and joined forces with one of the fastest growing Indie labels around, Bieler Bros. Records, home to Skindred, Nonpoint and others. This partnership allowed the band to do what they wanted and how they wanted with a record company that was behind them 100%.
The first single, The Hit manages to be both a vitriolic stomp over the corpse of their former record company experiences, as well as an anthem for rebellion against the norm, the bosses, the nagging partners, and the screaming landlords of our day-to-day existence.
Their new CD, Vultures, hits stores on October 24th. Smile Empty Soul - whove toured with everyone from breaking benjamin and Puddle Of Mudd to three days grace and Seether, and who took the 04 Sno-Core tour by storm - will now embark upon an extended bout of roadwork behind Vultures. But dont expect the shows to be carbon copies of the album; more than ever SES is bringing their ultra- frenetic approach to their live performances. Die just doesnt seem to be a word in this bands vocabulary regardless of what the Vultures do.
