My Interests

Simple, Stimulating, NOT Serious

I'd like to meet:

Me... In a Dark Alley!

Music:

It might be easier to mention the music I don't like. Not that I'm one to judge. I mean really, who cares? If you bump into someone that's a big Ronnie B fan or Kenny some other letter you may have the tendency to immediately dismiss them and walk away, perhaps denying yourself that one great freindship your life has been missing. I mean my mom is a big Roger Whittaker fan and I still love her! And I must confess that on long motorcycle rides the great white noise juke box has thrown some surprising melodies into the cortex and I'll find myself bellowing "And at the Copa, he fell in love" into my helmet. So who's to say? I've read others' musical influences and browse through them saying, "Oh yeah. Them! I forgot about them." So it goes. More to come.....

Movies:

Here for your viewing pleasure is a month and a day of my favourite movies. In no particular order: ... Persona ... Empire of the Sun ... Raising Arizona ... Blade Runner ... Crash ... 2001: A Space Odyssey ... Casablanca ... The Conversation ... Stand By Me ... The Deer Hunter ... Kill Bill: Vol I ... Monty Python and The Holy Grail ... The Third Man ... Chinatown ... Apocalypse Now ... Dr. Strangelove ... A Clockwork Orange ... McCabe and Mrs. Miller ... Taxi Driver ... City of God ... Goodfellas ... Miller's Crossing ... Pulp Fiction ... Raging Bull ... El Topo ... The Jerk ... Midnight Cowboy ... Blue Velvet ... Fight Club ... Blazing Saddles ... Shaft ... Easy Rider ... Brazil ... Errrrr..Make that a month and 2 days!

Television:

Fawlty Towers...Absolutely Fabulous...South Park...Ren and Stimpy...Family Guy...Bring Your Passport...Anything to do with Travel and Discovery...Creepy Canada...I'll have to give this more thought...

Books:

If I don't mention something by Styron off the top I bet someone I know will kick my ass. Thank god there's a few miles between us. And in that vein and as a barometer of how I feel about the potential power of the written word, let me quote The Author: "A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted. You should live several lives while reading it". So, let me recommend Sofie's Choice and A Tidewater Morning: Three Tales From Youth. Side note....On November 1, Styron will have been dead one year. I'd also recommend anything by Tim O'Brien and in particular "In The Lake of the Woods". The discussions the ending of that book generate can get heated. Did he do it? Did he not? Leslie Choice's "The Republic of Nothing" Most anything by Tom Robbins. It is said by some critics that his novels deal top heavy in matters of 'Drugs, sex and a refusal to grow up". And your point? But seriously folks, there is so much more than that. In many ways I suppose, he is the voice of my generation and I feel that, at the very least, we have not grown up together. Saul Bellow: The first Bellow book I read was "Henderson The Rain King" I've read all his books. I suppose if I had to pick a second it would be "The Adventures of Augie March", a book so different from Rain King..... Brian Odea's "High" (Random House US, Vintage Books CA, Virgin Books GB) an interesting and humerous turn on the bidness of "selling the green". And Brian should know. He walked the walk. Perhaps similar to some footsteps I may have made myself in days gone by. As Glen Frey sings in "Smugglers Blues", "It's the lure of easy money". Right? Wrong!..... And last but not least, the writings of Neil Peart. Eyes that see so much, the tongue to describe it and from a heart that feels it. Good work my friend... More to come. I would like to thank a few people for turning me on to many, many great reads. La Roja Loca, Neil and his brother Danny and Mills. Everyone should have such good influences........more to come soon.
