Even though I can't see very much, I run with the sighted dogs!

I am a seven-year-old dog (about 49 in dog years) who began to develop Progressive Retinal Atrohpy (PRA) about over two years ago. I still have a little bit of tunnel vision left in very bright light, but losing my sight has not slowed me down. I still run and play with my dog friends, and I love car rides and food and all the things that sighted dogs love. Blind dogs have a good quality of life as long as we are loved and cared for. Just don't rearrange the furniture or leave your shoes in the middle of the room, please.
I came to the City of Cleveland Kennel early in 2000 when a nice person found me in a paper bag left outside to freeze to death. My person saw me there when I was just seven weeks old. She was told that I was a Chihuahua! Hmmmm.
I was so malnourished that my bones grew too fast when I started to get good food, and my muscles couldn't keep up. My legs were so bowed that I could not walk right until I was several months old. But then, on top of all of my other problems, I got Parvo! I was really sick and spent a week in the hospital with needles stuck all over me.
But I am a tough guy. I made it, and now I am a healthy dog except that now I can't see so well. I wasn't too happy when I first started to go blind. I got a little grumpy with my friends because I couldn't see them coming, and they scared me. I thought everyone was sneaking up on me! But now I've adjusted to not seeing so well, and I get along great with all my friends again.
If you know someone with a blind dog, tell them that blind dogs are not that much different from other dogs. We might not see with our eyes, but we have learned to see with our hearts.
Thanks, Nestle, for my cool snow globe.
I won this award for looking mean, but I am really a nice guy. Honest!
Here is a slide show of my 7th birthday party on November 30, 2007.
