“To the singers and players of instruments; my springs are within theeâ€
The most recent God sent prodigy on the reggae scene.
Born to a single mother in Backstreet Tunapuna, he was not short of life trials and temptations. Legend spent some time in Venezuela before eventually stopping off on the sweet sister isle, Tobago. As a youth, he attended the prestigious Bishop’s High School in Tobago. After school… he ventured into several avenues of the corporate world immediately recognizing a monotony he could not endure.
Later.. after several bouts with the law… he migrated to the US with hopes of a brighter tomorrow. But it was not to be. Finally though, Legend found his true calling in music in the shattering solitude of incarceration. It was there that he decided to undertake a more spiritual path, asking God to reveal to him His will.
Out of this experience came the odes for his first single “The Wayâ€. Other early tracks include singles “Love & Lifeâ€, “Powers†“Pon Dem†and “Life Storyâ€.
Legend views music as a medium of remission for pasts deeds. A vocalist by calling, his passion for music is fuelled by his burning desire to serve the most high. His spirituality he holds in high esteem being a member of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
He says" the focus should never be the messenger but always the message never marveling at the created more than the creator".His songs speak of politics, life on the streets, love, unity, salvation and spiritual enrichment. Legend’s music gives voice to the day-to-day struggles of not only his life’s journey but also the plight of the impoverished; the oppressed who maintain a devout spirituality that which is the only source of their strength.
He enjoys spending time with his two children whom he views as his best work yet.
To his patient, devoted mother, he attributes his survival skills.
He says “She sees the good in me when others can’t. She birthed me with a set of values incomparable to none.â€
Simply put; his strong sense of family values teaches that our women are mothers of generations so they need to respect themselves and walk in grace and truth; children are the future generation so we need to nurture them and keep them on the path of the Almighty.
Thru it all his oath remains the same: “I pledge to keep burning, the fire of equal rights , justice and love toward all mankind as I continue to fly the Ites, Green and Gold banner til the day of reckoning.â€
