About Me

HANS LUEDEMANN Pianist and composer Hans Lüdemann is at home in all musical worlds. He has found his own way on his search for contemporary forms of expression without borders. His roots in European tradition and Jazz melt with African influences. In a subtle way, these have been become integral part of his personal way of improvising and composing music. Lüdemann likes to take the listener on adventurous journeys, looking for the "notes between the keys" and the "music beyond the tones", reviving the historic instrument Clavichord and expanding the piano with electronic samples into a microtonal instrument. Born 1961 in Hamburg, Hans Lüdemann started to articulate musical ideas at age 5, at 6 to study classical piano. To follow his musical ideas was his motivation of intense occupation with music. After having lived in Los Angeles, USA, for one year in 1978/79, Lüdemann studied Jazz piano with Joachim Kühn in Hamburg. He started his own projects of solo piano and groups with Andreas Willers and Gebhard Ullmann. He moved to Köln to study at the Musikhochschule, where he received the first "Konzertexamen" in Jazz-piano in Germany. Lüdemann went to Banff/Canada for advanced studies with Dave Holland and Anthony Davis. From 1982 - 1993 he had a close collaboration with Roger Hanschel/Reiner Linke in the groups NANA/Blau Frontal/NANA-Orchester. In 1985 Lüdemann became member of the group CHORUS with Eberhard Weber/Jan Garbarek. He has worked with many fine musicians, among them Paul Bley (piano Duo CD), Mark Feldman, Marc Ducret, Heinz Sauer, Toumani Diabaté and played in the groups of saxophonist Angelika Niescier and singer Eda Zari. Lüdemann first travelled to Africa in 1983 and since then has developed a strong personal relation to African music. Today Lüdemann concentrates on his own projects such as the TRIO IVOIRE with Aly Keita (Balaphon) and Chander Sardjoe (drums), his solo programs, Duos with Reiner Winterschladen (trumpet) and Tata Dindin (voice/Kora). In 2007 he started the trio series "die Kunst des Trios", experimenting with different concepts of playing within the classic format of piano, bass and drums. Hans Lüdemann is performing regularly on international concert stages and festivals. Tours have led him around the world. His music is documented on more than 20 CDs, among them "Aphorisms" (1991), "the natural piano" (1994), "Futurism" (1997), "Kora meets piano" (2000), "African Variations" (2003) und "Touching Africa" (2006). As a composer, Lüdemann has worked for many instruments and settings, from piano music and chamber music to the orchestral works „Geschichte 2“ and „Verloren ins weite Blau“. Commissions for WDR, Hessischer Rundfunk, SWR, Ensemble Indigo, Film music. Lüdemann was appointed member of the federal German jury for the Villa Massimo/Rome prize in 2003.--------------------------------------------------"one of the most expressive and original European pianists" (Jazz Podium)----- "one of the great German Jazz pianists" (Frankfurter Rundschau) ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------- TRIO IVOIRE: Trio Ivoire shows that even in the 21st century, still discoveries are possible.“ (JAZZthetik, JulyAugust 2002)Unique trio uniting personal roots of Jazz/European/African/Indian influences into a contemporary sound of its own..... the label for that has yet to be invented. Sounds Like: "THE HAPPY FUTURE OF JAZZ...In Lüdemann..s music current trends of electrification and globalisation can be found as well as diverse lines of tradition that could be indicated by such names as Bach, Cage, Coltrane or Makeba. That the simultaneous availibility of all information does not lead to an unintelligible mixture, but into a recognizable language of his own is one of the strengths of Lüdemanns music. That joy of physical motion has its place as well as intellectual puzzles, spontaneous improvisation as well as reflected composition, is another one. If the future of Jazz sounds like Hans Lüdemanns Futurisms, we can look forward to it happily and hopefully."
