Biography of Iyah Lazer
Christened, Dillon Alton Hines, Reggae Recording Artiste, Iyah Lazer, was born in one of Montego Bay’s Inner City communities in the mid 1970’s.
His father Russell, and mother Jasmine Murray were both devoted lovers of Reggae Music, thus, he was exposed to the music at an early age.
At a tender age, due to the fact that both his parents immigrated to the United States, Iyah Lazer left Montego Bay’s Inner City, and went to live with his grandparents in the farming district of Roehampton, located in the rural climbs of the parish of St. James. For a number of years, he was away from the music, though his love for it, never faded.
During his five year attendance at Anchovy Secondary (now Anchovy High), Iyah Lazer’s keen interest in Reggae Music and Entertainment, caught the attention of school mates, teachers, and friends; who all encouraged him to pursue the business more aggressively.
However, it was not until 1993, whilst at home with relatives, and commemorating the death of his grandfather, who died on a sad day in February, three years prior; did Iyah Lazer develop true motivation to follow his dreams. It was the tragic news that his mother had passed away. His entire life changed after that, and music became his solace. He began writing his own lyrics and rhymes, and eventually became a popular young Dancehall act, within Montego Bay’s enclaves.
However, in 1997, shortly after the birth of his son, Iyah Lazer decided to switch from raw Dancehall, to the more Cultural side of the music.
Over the years, Iyah Lazer has shared the same stage as such veterans, to include; Beenie Man, Beres Hammond, Singing Melody and Lady Saw; amongst others.
In 2006, he released his first album, entitled, “State Of Emergency”. Some of his more memorable tracks from the album include the singles, “Blood In The Streets”; a collaboration with Yugo Bandooloo; as well as “Oh Mama”, a single that expresses Iyah Lazer’s sorrow and regret over the early passing of his mother; and the very popular single, “Fox Under Lox”.
He has performed or appeared on several shows and programmes; to include “Smile Jamaica” and “Teen Scene” on Television Jamaica; “On Stage” on CVM-TV (Jamaica); the Fame Road Show, Unity In The Hills, and Western Link Up. To date, Iyah Lazer’s greatest performance came in 2007 at the Reggae SumFest 15th Anniversary Party, held at Club Inferno in Montego Bay, where his performance was nothing short of “breathtaking”.
Iyah Lazer, in an Interview with TV Host Suzie Q, on the programme, “Reggae Top Ten – Artiste Spotlight”, proclaimed that he gets his strength from the work of the late, great Peter Tosh and Bob Marley; and draws even more inspiration from watching people like Beres Hammond, Tarrus Riley and Jah Mason, perform live.
At present, Iyah Lazer is in studio working on a sophomore album, which is expected to bring bigger and better things.
Iyah Lazer is grateful to everyone in his life, both past and present, who has contributed positively to his career; especially his father, Russell, who he claims, is his biggest fan.
