Blowing up like a boy band hooked on dynamite

About Me

Check out Jay Kaufman's Official Website for more info, DJ sets and a downloadable press pack!

I'm a professional/DJ producer (AKA really poor struggling artiste) who makes and plays electronic music. I aspire to be on a box of Wheaties at some point in my lifetime. I freely admit I'm totally addicted to MySpace and all that it entails!
Jay originally started out as a club DJ playing abrasive and beat-heavy hip-hop such as Public Enemy and A Tribe Called Quest. Eventually, his 1980s synth pop influences caught up with him and Jay slowly began to play house and early techno at clubs and raves in his hometown area of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada (which is an hour west of Toronto) from 1990 onwards.
Known for his eclectic tastes, Jay has gained the most notoriety with the progressive house genre; yet he'll play funky techno, deep house, breakbeat and tech-house seamlessly all in the same set.
After his original involvement in DJing under the name Loop Dokter, Jay shifted gears into more serious projects. Since then, he has refocused his energy on recording and DJing under his birth name. In the process, he has sought an outlet with the development of his forthcoming label, Tortoise Shell Recordings which is set to release its first releases in the very near future.
Tortoise Shell has already achieved some success even before its launch. Jay licensed the first scheduled release on TSR, Daniel Gregorys Deep Cover (Kaufman & Streetdegrees Fully Covered remix), to the Slinky Trans:Atlantik mix CD compilation in October of 2004 although the track was improperly credited as being by Jay. Tortoise Shell is set to launch in 2005 with artists such as the aforementioned Todd Sargent and Daniel Gregory, Mick Blue Haze Burns recording as Cardboard, Kevin Sunray and of course Jay himself.
In 2001, Jay signed to UK-based progressive house label, Sonambulist Recordings (formerly Little Fluffy Records).
His first release came out early October of 2001 entitled The Fear. The Fear came with remixes from Katakana as well as Lushreed and saw play from top DJs Anthony Pappa, Danny Howells, Pete Heller, Rowan Breeder Blades, Nick Warren, Graham Gold, DJ duo Parks and Wilson and many other Alist DJs. Graham Gold was even kind enough to play it several times on his legendary KISS FM radio show in London, UK. The Fear was selected to be on the Slinky UK World Class CD, but sadly was one of two tracks that were cut from the track listing just before the CDs release. Furthermore, the track spent 6 weeks on the Balance Promote Group Record Pool 4 of those weeks in the top 25. Jay has also released 'Fade To Black' on Canadian label Fullbodysoundsystem and has forthcoming tracks and remixes for English labels, Sequential and Innovate. Jays other tracks have drawn praise from many of the worlds better-known underground DJs such as Danny Teneglia, BT, the Guvernments (Toronto) Mark Oliver, Luke Fair, Armin Van Burren, Ian Ossia and so on.
Jays accolades not only extend into music. He has performed on international TV as a guest DJ for the Canadian MTV-equivalent Much Music-based show Electric Circus several times over. The long-running, but sadly now-defunct dance show went out to viewers in much of Europe, Canada, the United States and even South America. The first show he appeared on also featured Britney Spears and was one of the most replayed Electric Circus ever. As a result the show went into heavy syndication to a world-wide audience of over 500,000 people.
As a writer, Jay has also written for Thousand Words Magazine of Chicago and several other publications. His writing has included interviews with top names in the business such as his feature article with the Platipus Sound System, BT, Australias Steve Smart and many more.
Somehow, Jay Kaufman still finds time to fit other things into his hectic schedule Formerly the host of TECHNOcracy on CFBU 103.7FM Niagara; Jay formed the first and longest running electronic music radio show the station had on offer since its inception in 1995. He has also been a guest on various other radio shows on the FM dial in Canada - including plays in Panama, Peru, Northern Ireland, and Internet stations Eccentricbeats.com and U4EA in Belgium.
Jay has also been involved in promoting parties and club nights in the St. Catharines and Kitchener areas, co-founding respected club nights (through his production company Slamwerks) in Ontario, Canada. His night Disco3000 ran for four years and was committed to bringing the best international DJ and live talent to the greater Niagara Region of Ontario.
Jays past gigs schedule reads like a map of North America. He has played as far West as Missoula, Montana; as far East as Ottawa, Canada and as far South as Miami, Florida, USA. Jay was even asked to play the Alive Outdoor Festival 2001 in Belgium with people like Iggy Pop and Front 242. More recently Jay played the Ultra 2004 Festival in Miami. Recently, further interest has come from as far abroad as Central America and it appears as though Jay will be touring Europe, Asia and Oceana in the near future.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: jaykaufman.ca
Band Members: Jay Kaufman - arranger, producer, engineer, writer, remixer, DJ
Influences:
Progressive house, tech-house, tribal house, nu school breaks, funky techno, EDM, IDM, MDMA, FBI, IRS, downtempo, chillout and pretty much electronic music as a whole. I also listen to more esoteric electronic music like Air, Goldfrapp, Royksopp, Delerium, The Orb, Orbital, etc. As such, that includes a large portion of 1980s synth pop as being some of the greatest (albeit often very camp) music ever made. Those bands include Tears For Fears, The Pet Shop Boys, OMD, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Human League, Talk Talk, Eurithmics, Simple Minds, Duran Duran (their new album is fantastic), Yaz/Yazoo, Eurasure, Bronski Beat, ABC, Heaven 17, The Thompson Twins, Soft Cell, Dead Or Alive, Information Society, The Art of Noise, A Flock Of Seagulls, etc. Essentially what was considered 'new wave' at the time. Also I was a sucker for a lot of Stock, Aitken and Waterman productions like Rick Astley, Banarama and Kylie mainly due to their heavy synth work. Rock music was pretty heavily ignored by me growing up in the 1980s. I wish I'd ignored the fashion then too. Pastels DO NOT look good on me - nor does big hair!

I do like quite a bit of funk, jazz, soul and classical. I'm less versed in jazz and classical but I know what I like.

I was and still am a big black music fan - with the exception of what's called 'hip hop' and 'R & B' these days. That said, I do like some modern hip hop like The Black Eyed Peas, Outkast, The Roots, Roots Manueva, Talib Kweli, Jurrassic 5, etc. As for modern R&B, I'd have to say I've liked what I've heard out of John Legend and Alicia Keys. I'm sick of being marketed to instead of hearing good music. R Kelly should be shot. Otherwise, I'm more into late '80s and early '90s hip hop like Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, X-Clan, Jungle Brothers, Black Sheep, 3rd Bass, De La Soul, Gangstarr, etc.

I like a lot of classic soul music like Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, etc. As for funk, I'm well into my Parliament, Gap Band, The Commodores, Rick James, Cameo, Prince, Zapp & Roger and other more obscure bands that you've never heard of. Actually, Prince spreads many genres and I think the man is a genius. 3121 (his new album) is brilliant! As for the blues, it ain't the blues without my man Robert Johnson. Anyone willing to sell their soul to the devil so they can play guitar like a badass is one bad mofo who's dedicated to their craft. Can you say you sold your soul to the devil to be amazing at your craft? Other artists I dig from the blues include but are not limited to Howlin' Wolf ("They call it stormy Monday, but Tuesday's just as bad....), Muddy Waters, etc.

My rock tastes are very specific yet eclectic - I'm a sucker for The Darkness. God knows why because they pretty much define everything I hate about those types of bands, except I like them! I think it's because they're a parody unto themselves. Definitely material for cranking up to 11!

I also rate Aussie band Jet. FANTASTIC album. North Americans will know them as the guys who soundtrack the Mac iPod player commercial and several other hits that got play afterwards. Current other bands that I rank include are The Killers (fucking WICKED band), Scissor Sisters, Doves, Keane (buy this album now), The Bravery, The Soundtracks Of Our Lives, The Sounds, The Stills, Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, Hard-Fi, The Editors, Interpol, etc. U2 rock. Bono is the fucking man. Canadian Hawksley Workman gets a lot of rotation in my CD player (yes I buy music since I make it and know how tough it can be - freeloading downloaders can die you leeching no goods!).

I'm also into a lot of Britpop like James, Travis, Oasis, Manic Street Preachers, Coldplay (although sadly overkilled on the radio). What's come out of the UK in the last 15 years in terms of rock music pees over anything North America can muster. Scandinavia also seems to be on it as of late too. In the same category bands I cannot stand include, but not limited to Blur and Radiohead. Thom Yorke is a twat. Take your whiney voice and jump off a cliff you angst-ridden, constantly-complaining-in-interviews arsehole! 'This sucks, that sucks, you all suck, I'm the greatest.' Depeche Mode does angst so much better than Radiohead. Thank goodness - because they're a much better band too. ;)

I quite like a lot of movie scores too written by people like Georgio Moroder ('The Chase' is a classic), Laylo Schiffrin (sp?), John Williams, the whole Hans Zimmer crew, Vangelis, Brian Eno, etc. My ex-girlfriend thought I was nuts when we'd go see the movie because often I'd be more interested in the score of the film and who did it than the actual movie. I often stay in the theatre to watch the music credits roll by to find out who's behind it. Oddly enough, I don't own a single movie score! That should change though. Feel free to buy me some.

This is a country-free zone! Anything with more twang than plucking a guitar string or sucking on a lemon should stay in the backwoods of Arkansas or Tennessee where it belongs - with the hillbillies! Tobi-what's-his-name-Keith's 'I Love This Bar'? PLUH-EEEASE. I can't take country seriously. I've tried and tried and tried and I still can't handle that music. There's very little that annoys me in terms of music other than poop, erm, pop music, country and loud/obnoxious guitar-driven music and that Jack Johnson guy. Talk about boring plod. I can't get over why girls seem to adore him.

I am so passionate about music. It's what makes my heart beat, keeps my soul alive and fills my emotions with inexplicable joy. It is my shoulder to cry on when I am down, my crutch when I am hurt, my amusing friend when I want to laugh and my enemy when I want to be angry. It's such a great part of my life and I couldn't honestly live without it. I'd rather go blind and have all of my limbs chopped off than go deaf and not be able to listen to music!

Sounds Like: I've been told I have a very unique sound. I'm not sure who I really sound like. I think I sound like me. I'll leave it up to you to determine who I sound like. Lately a lot of people have been saying they can really hear my Depeche Mode influences coming out in my music, but I don't think I sound much like them in general. I think I'm a wall of sound of all of the influences listed above.
