My name is Paul Knight but in a few circles I am known as Big Paulie Walnuts (plus a few other alias’s over the years).

My origins are that of an East End bad boy, a true villainous cockney from the streets of London; that was raised on a council Estate (similar to the projects – low to no income family housing), that acted as a half-way refuge for recently released convicts, future convicts and all the dredge that came in-between. It was a true multi-cultural community that acted as a very bad influence to the young and corruptible, it was one of those places where you could leave your front door unlocked but you still kept a baseball bat tucked away and close to hand. We were a prime example of an almost working class family and although coming from a deprived background…I would not change it for the world.

The short version of my life is that of the cliché, ‘poor, bad boy made good’, but as we all know, life is not a short version. The long journey that got me from A to Y (obviously not A to Z, because I’m not dead…yet), was long, dark and near fatal…If I was a religious person and true to my Mum’s Catholic beliefs, for the things I have done I would be looking to spend thousands of years in Purgatory before being rejected from ‘The Gates’ by Big Gee’s bouncer, St. Pete. Thankfully, I am not a believer so when my number is finally up, that will just be the end rather than the beginning of something else.

It seems weird to all those that have known me before 2001 that I have become what I have become…a stable family man who saw the benefits of having a decent job than living from scam to scam. It would come as an even bigger shock to all those that met me after 2001, just how I made a living or lived my life before then. Two different worlds with two different sets of spectators all peering through the same looking glass…it is the Matrix without the fancy special effects… (Because it did have little pills, long black coats, matching shades, large guns, government agents, huge fights, rebellious revolts spiced with sacrifice and for some, plug holes in the back of the head – if you catch my drift).

I live by the golden rule of keeping my Private life to myself. My personal / social life can be shared amongst a handful of people and my work life is all about work and very little else and the rest is for you, you wonderful readers.

How do I cope when I have so much to say? I have directed my output to the world of literacy and have just written my first novel, ‘Coding of a concrete animal’ , using personal experience to push a gripping tale to the point that the reader cannot wait for the sequel… So do a fella a solid and buy a copy today…signed copies are available if you wish to purchase from me direct… email me at [email protected] for more information.

My Interests

It may or not be obvious but I haven’t seen the inside of a gym for several years, and although my passion for boxing as faded somewhat I still own and use 18oz gloves on a very heavy bag every other day. I don’t think any one could fault the art and discipline that boxing can give an individual, it gives confidence, structure, life lessons and of course you learn how to throw a proper punch and smack the crap out of an opponent!!

So with that paragraph out the way, it should be transparent that I like me boxing…and in a different life I just loved a tear up, toe to toe, straightener or all in, I didn’t care…lets have it on the cobbles…end of! I undertook a few other disciplines over the years but boxing was always my fav.

Nevertheless, with age comes wisdom, slower reflects and aching joints (lost knuckles, blown knees and dislocated shoulders) the price you pay for fighting on the streets and in the cages…(yes, UFC may have started the media attention but enclosed, full on contact fighting has been doing the rounds on the underground scene for centuries).

Now I am retired from that life…I enjoy the more cerebral aspects of life, chess, backgammon, computers (and everything that comes with it), graphic design, the world of PSP and writing. Followed up with cooking and drawing…I’m a sucker for Frank Millers’ style.

I also enjoy a good read, especially about people I know from back in the day…it seems everyone is going straight ; )

I'd like to meet:

This is a tricky question for me because I have met a lot of people over the years that may be seen as people worth meeting. After spending 9 years in the Entertainment Security industry (minding, bouncing, surveillance etc).

I have encountered many a celeb’ (Actors, Actresses, Singers, Sport stars, Authors, Promoters, DJ’s etc), politicians, wealthy business figures and stars from the glamour industry, most of whom I can’t talk about due to confidentiality contracts that got signed.

From a personal level, I have met and worked along side some of my role models and mentors (see Heroes section on the left hand side)…but I wouldn’t say no to a pint and a pack of Smokey bacon crisps with
Geoff Thompson , a well documented hard b*stard and acclaimed star in his own right,
Vince McMahon, CEO of the WWE, for building a little something into a big something and pick his brains
and perhaps get a chance to sit down for a drink and a Havana with Samuel L Jackson, John Travolta and James Caan for being three of the coolest people on this planet.

Music:

I know it’s a cop-out but I like practically everything…depending on my mood.

If I’m training then the rock, metal or grunge goes on.

If I’m staying frosty, then it’s R&B, Lover’s rock, reggae (not ragga) and smooth groves.

If its brain time then it’s classical / opera, (I enjoy the Tenors more).

If its sing along time then it’s Motown or Atlantic (northern) soul.

Every other aspect is covered by pop, easy listening (Rat pack, Ella, Dinah, Tony etc), dance or rock ‘n’ roll…oh yeah momma!

Movies:

It’s action baby…all the way.

Full on, volume up, car chasing, bone crunching fights, explosions and gun play…Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Fast and Furious, most Bruckheimer movies, typical popcorn, shut ya brain down stuff.

Although don’t get me wrong, I love an Indie (Independent not Bollywood), Pitch Black, Kevin Smith’s films and such.

Plus you can’t go wrong with the Rocky series or the ever popular cult classic Blues Brother.

But my Fav’s have got to be the epics, once upon time in America, Gladiator, Casino, Goodfellas, L.O.T.R and of course, the greatest movie epic of all time… The Godfather.

While on the subject of movies…I just want to give a quick shout out to the guys and gals in my list on some tasty Brit Flick action…Rollin’ with the nines and Hell to pay, true examples that the Indie British movie scene is NOT dead and buried.

Television:

I feel put out that I still have to pay for a TV license when the last thing I watched on the BBC was the ‘Only fools and horses’ Christmas special repeat about 7 years ago…I just don’t do terrestrial TV.

The yanks know how to make a TV program, The shield, The Sopranos, 24, The Wire, CSI, Las Vegas, Rescue Me, Brotherhood, Nip/Tuck etc etc etc.

They also have the hold on comedy show’s…apart from Phoenix nights / Max and Paddy and little Britain…the Brits lost touch with real comedy when the likes or Porridge, Fools and horses, Fast Show and Not the 9 o’clock news stopped being produced.

The demise of Benny Hill, Tommy Copper, Eric Morecombe plus the Ronnie Baker didn’t help none either!!!

Books:

Mine… ’Coding of a concrete animal’ get’s its main stream release on 1st March 2007, do a fella solid and buy a copy…many thanks.

Truth be known I’m more of a graphic novelist fan, I adore the art work that accompanies these tales plus it helps that I am a comag fan (do they still call them that?), Wolverine, Batman, Lobo, Daredevil, Superman etc…I do love a superhero comic.

When I’m not writing or nose deep in a graphic novel, I like non-fiction biographies, especially about people I either know or have had a connection with. For me, I like reading the other person’s take on certain situations that I was either involved in / with or privy to first hand conversations. The underground gossip circle would make you laugh out loud on some of the stories that did the rounds…so I like getting the first person perspectives.

I also enjoyed Cookster’s book ‘There’s no room for jugglers in my circus’ (that title is the mutts)…do another fella a solid and support his work to…available at all good book retailers.

In fact, just support new authors…because unless you have tried to get a book published (without already being in the media’s eye) you can not start to understand the level or years of rejection that an author must go through to make a dream come true.

Heroes:

I have no heroes…I’m secure enough in my own capabilities not to have to value someone else for doing something else…but I do give respect to those who do. I do however have Mentor’s, my Dad being top of the list…followed by those I have closely known, worked along side or met:

Lenny Mclean - R.I.P
Roy Shaw
Charlie Kray - R.I.P
Dave Courtney
Big Ben Perry
Tiger - R.I.P
Monty (Jurassic Mark)
Denny Cooke
Freddie Davies - R.I.P
Charlie White - R.I.P
Nev - R.I.P
Big John D and Big Jim D (not related)
Stevie Green
Gary Joseph
Mickey Barham
Alan Powder
Danny Rose
Derek Hart
JC (from the Stranglers)
Wayne Ford

Each one taught me something that I still hold true and have experienced from, even today. So I thank you all and to those who are no longer with us:

'May you be raising Hell in Heavens tranquillity'
