About Me

What is different about The Hanging Gardens of Brooklyn?
The HGBK feels that city dwellers deserve the same opportunities as country folk have for a healthy connection to their food. HGBK's produce will be harvested hours before it is dropped off at your door, and delivered by planet-friendly means, bicycle cart and biodiesel powered truck.
The Hanging Gardens of Brooklyn are modeled on the example set by Community Sustained Agriculture-CSA farms around the US and beyond.
In a typical CSA, garden supporters buy a subscription to the farms production at the beginning of the year. During the productive season members receive weekly produce.
This continues throughout the season, usually late spring or early summer through fall, ending around first hard frost.
Memberships are typically offered in differing sizes, single, couple, family, et cetera, and may offer other options such as eggs and dairy, vegan, specialty veggies or herbs and so on.
NEW PICS FOR JULY

The Biodiesel "Superstation" is underway in Sunset Park;

My Interests

We've been on Myspace since February 2007.
We're all about introducing the great folks of Brooklyn to our revolutionary concept in organically grown local produce.
It's grown above the streets' heavy metals in intensive raised beds chock full o' organic goodness, and a few hours after harvest, your fresh produce is delivered to your neighborhood by biodiesel van, and dropped off at your doorstep by bicycle delivery cart!
Our test gardens for the 2008 year are now in their second planting;
we will post photos and journal notes as this project progresses.

MISSION STATEMENT:
I. The Hanging Gardens of Brooklyn will provide high quality organic produce at a fair price to any interested party within the distribution area.
II. The HGBK will produce crops grown without chemically manufactured fertilizers or artificial pesticides, hormones, irradiation or genetically-modified seeds. The HGBK will utilize organic growing methodology, to include: species inter-planting, regionally specific and heirloom seed varieties, water reclamation and conservation, crop rotation and cover crops. The HGBK will also continue to implement new methods of conservation and innovative methods of environmentally responsible farming to ensure that the HGBK is a responsible community leader in environmental protection.
III. The HGBK supports the use of renewable and low-impact energy sources and, when it is necessary to use powered machinery, will use Green vehicles and power equipment: specifically powered by methane, ethanol, bio-diesel, photo voltaic (solar) and wind.
IV. Membership is open to any person or group, regardless of any heritage, religion, ethnicity, political affiliation or non-affiliation, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability or any other unforeseen method of unethical discrimination.
V. The HGBK believes quality food, fresh water, clean air and a healthy work and living environment is everyone’s birthright. As the HGBK continues to grow, it will implement comprehensive health, wellness, and savings and investment plans for employees as well as community programs to educate our neighbors about sustainable agriculture and conservation, healthy lifestyles and self-improvement.

I'd like to meet:

YOU!, Tom Szaky from TerraCycle, Bette Midler, Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, anyone and everyone interested in alternative transportation, garden design, gardening, grassroots community action groups; alternative home builders; folks into: culinary herbs and herbal remedies, organic farming, nutrition, alternative energy and fuel, co-operative unions; and anyone interested in making their neighborhood and world a better place to work and live!
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT FRIEND REQUESTS:
We don't like to be poopy, honest we don't (that's for the compost pile), but we have been infected, hijacked and phished enough times to be a little gun-shy.
So, if you send a friend request without a picture, or that picture of the guy with a dog on the porch that is actually selling something, we will delete the request.
Same goes for pages that are just advertisements, or pages that are plastered with comments about penile enlargement, ipod phones, and Starbucks giftcards.
We think of our page as a place to meet neat folks, not to sell or buy stuff. If you are interested in our product or service, please visit our website, (link below). And if we want to buy your stuff, we'll do the same; no need to solicit us, we'll check out your website, thanks.
We love making new friends, so if you do have a private page and don't already know us, please send us a message.
And not like we're picky or anything,
but if your page is about negative energy, hatred, intolerance, or 1 sided religious dogma, feel free to do your thing without us. Ok? OK! PEACE!!
