About Me
Arrived in London in 1977, wanted to be a pop star. As Home Service, released a couple of independent records on our own label, Crystal Groove Records, folding and assembling in living room in Tottenham flat. Did some gigs, Moonlight, Blitz. John Peel played us.Fell in love with recording studios, hustled a job as an Engineer at Ark in Kingston, then quickly passed from 8 track to 24 track. Pineapple (Southall - great curry!), Southern (Wood Green) then to Air studios. Worked virtually 24 hours a day, juggling Air with external producing work for Cherry Red and others.
Left Air, phone started going for more and more Production work. Black, Intaferon/Simon F, Tom Robinson, Bucks Fizz, Tommy Page, Kim Criswell. Rocketz in Milan, Playhaus in Munich. Hits with Strawberry Switchblade and Red Box. Hit in Scotland with Win. In France with Carmel.
Flow of trips to Tokyo (great sushi!) to work mainly with Chara, also Keichi Suzuki, Mimori Yusa, Toshihiko Takamizawa.
Two albums in Denmark with Gangway. I'm very proud of these.
I was an 80s Record Producer with big glasses!General financial crisis in '91. Moved from Chiswick into a small flat in Westbourne Park. Still here. Love it! Our lucky flat.
Moved my studio into the workshop/basement of the former Trident studio in St Anne's Court in Soho (thanks Nick!). Things started turning round again.
Some dance stuff in the early 90's, Puro Sesso, couple of remixes with Rocky and Diesel, Mind the Gap.Advertising agency JWT wanted to do a Kodak commercial with a real Dance track. They walked into Unity Records in Beak St who recommended me (I had been working with two of the guys Stuart and Richard). The Director turned out to be Frank Budgen. This was my break into Advertising. I wrote music for tons of commercials. Sharwoods, Tesco, BMW, Ford, Vauxhall, Cable & Wireless, Audi, Johnnie Walker, Orange. Moved into Berwick Street. Still here.
Also in 91/92, right after moving into Soho, wrote the soundtrack for Sally Potter's movie Orlando. Couple of fascinating trips to LA followed. After a few years in Advertising I was looking for something different, something less all-or-nothing... so I bought a wine shop. The Winery in London W9 . I have always been a foodie, always loved wine. This was/is a hobby gone mad. Still going strong. Import all our own wine. Small growers, fantastic quality, very natural, loads of character. Lots of travel sniffing out wine - France, Germany, Italy, Spain and California. Some TV stuff: Cardiac Arrest. Trial and Retribution 8 with Evelyn Glennie. (I'd been on the Shadow tour with her previously)Recent music, Neo-Classical album - string piece picked-up by Transport for London. Collaborated with Mark Moore as UltraViva, released by Beautycase Records in Mannheim.
Just finished an album of Electronica with Jesper Siberg (techie whizz and caffeine addict from Copenhagen). Now released. Tom Robinson, who built The Winery website, has designed my www.davidmotion.com music site. Coding by Raffi Jacobs, it's now live!
Also just releasing my Neo-Classic album, picking up where I left off on Orlando.Personal stuff: Born in Hamburg 1959 as David Christopher Simon Freeman. Mother Inge is German, my father, also David, is English. Two sisters, Katrin and Claudia. I have lived with my girlfriend Vera Hegarty since 1982 - 25 year anniversary last summer! We can't quite believe it!
