Extreme living in New York’s Chelsea Hotel, from the Beats through Punk, and on into the present day.
Joe Ambrose stayed at the Chelsea Hotel, home to many famous authors, artists and outlaws down the years. Andy Warhol shot Chelsea Girls there and welsh poet Dylan Thomas died there, having reputedly inspired the young Zimmerman to change his name to Bob Dylan.
Chelsea Hotel Manhattan is the first factual book on the building and features conversations with William Burroughs, Paul Bowles, Gerard Malanga, Herbert Huncke, Victor Bockris and others.
Every room at the Chelsea tells its own story—not unlike The Overlook in Stephen King’s The Shining. Nancy Spungen met her death in one room, an episode recounted in detail by Rockets Redglare.
Books have been written in the Chelsea Hotel (Stanley Bard, the hotel manager keeps a collection of them), but none have been written about it until now..
Joe Ambrose works as a DJ and member of experimental hip hop group Islamic Diggers, who produced the CD 10%, featuring Bill Laswell, Marianne Faithfull, John Cale, and William Burroughs.
Ambrose co-organised The Here to Go Show, a celebration of the wild cultural experimentation of William Burroughs and Brion Gysin. Collaborators on this included Iggy Pop, Marianne Faithfull, and William Burroughs. The Here To Go Show was documented in the movie Destroy All Rational Thought.
His books include two novels for Pulp Books, Serious Time (1998) and Too Much Too Soon (2000), Moshpit Culture (2001), an investigation of covert punk culture from inside the moshpit, and Gimme Danger (2002), a biography of punk icon Iggy Pop.
Ambrose has performed with Lydia Lunch, John Cale, Scanner, Anita Pallenberg, Ian Sinclair, Howard Marks, Tav Falco, Richard Hell, and Morocco's Master Musicians of Joujouka.
