[email protected]It all started back in 2005 Influenced by the New Orleans funk wizards the Meters as wellas the contemporary groups like the New Mastersounds, the Poets of Rhythm and the SoulInvestigators five funk enthusiasts including Anton Shustrov, Stas Rybochkin, Ivan Kurzakov,Alexander Shtykov and Sasha Gonzo decided to make a band to play their original stuffconcentrating efforts on unsophisticated uptempo dancers. Their debut took place at the St.Petersburg-based Griboedov-club on the next day after the one and only Godfather of SoulJames Brown passed away. (R.I.P. Mr.Brown) Since that time Wake&Bakers played about 20 gigs at different venues both in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
In winter 2007 the band got into the St. Petersburg Recording Studio (former Melodiya) totape some of their tracks. The funk non-conformists decided to go 100% analogue and recordedlive one take using old equipment and instruments. For this recording session the group invited the well-known Russian painter, designer and sitar player Alexander Konanchuk as well as Kirill Vetoshkin, a sax player, who later joined the band as the "official" member. The full-length album was not released however the group was noticed by the founder of the Munich-based Tramp Records Tobias Kirmayer who released the band’s first 7" on the 10th ofSeptember 2007.
