Hammers Legend 1897-1988

About Me

Im Vic Watson. Im here to claim my name as one of the best West Ham players that has ever lived. Please read on and if you feel like supporting me please add me as a friend.I was born in Girton just outside of Cambridge in 1897. In 1920 I was signed by West Ham for a staggering £50.I replaced West Ham's current star forward at the time Sydney Puddefoot when he signed for Falkirk in 1922. That season, my 22 league goals were largely responsible for West Ham's promotion to the First Division. This instilled a period of consolidation for West Ham in the First Division, the highlight of which was the 1926-1927 season when West Ham finished in 6th place in Division One.In the next nine seasons in the top flight I scored over 200 goals. In 1929-30, I scored 42 goals in only 40 league appearances and 8 in 4 cup games. That season I scored over half of West Ham’s 98 league and cup goals. On 9th February, 1929, I scored six in West Ham's 8-2 victory over Leeds. Touch!!On April 28 1923 came one of my proudest moments as a player as I helped West Ham reach the FA Cup Final later to become known as the famous 'White Horse Final'. The White Horse Final was the first football match to be played at the new Wembley Stadium (or Empire Stadium as it was known then) in London. There was such eagerness to attend the final at the new national stadium that an estimated 200,000 people crammed into the 127,000 capacity stadium. As such, the crowds overflowed onto the pitch as there was no room on the terraces. It fell to mounted policemen, among them PC George Scorey on his giant white horse 'Billie', to try and clear the crowds from the pitch. They were successful, and the game went ahead 45 minutes late. Bolton eventually won the match and the Cup 2-0.I went on to score 326 goals in 505 career appearances for West Ham making me the clubs highest top scorer ever and giving me a 65% goals per game ratio. I also have five international caps for England scoring four goals.I passed away in 1988 having had a good innings at the age of 91 yrs old.
