Lollo Meier

A Master of Gypsy Swing

About Me

TV Interview for Djangofollies 2008
Among the gypsy jazz musicians that play guitar in the style of Django Reinhardt, there are a few that really stand out. Lollo Meier , a Dutch gypsy, was raised on Gypsy Jazz and started playing at the age of 12 with members of his family. He is truly a legacy of the old master and certainly belongs to an elite group. Gypsy blood runs through the veins of this absolute top guitar player who made it his goal in life to carry on the music of Django Reinhardt. His technique and suppleness are amazing, his music refreshing, not just the standard tunes that are often heard in this genre. His unique style of playing has resulted in an outstanding performance today, showing an extraordinary talent, simply because Lollo makes the music he loves. In addition, he is an accomplished composer of new tunes which have that genuine Django flavour you just can't resist.

Influences: "Lollo Meier is a remarkable man with a remarkable style of playing and aside from his legendary cousin, Fapy Lafertin , is recognized as the most lyrical guitarist in the European Manouche style."
"When I was casting about for a European special guest to invite to Django in June this year, I called upon Sylvia Rushbrooke for her recommendation. As the owner of London’s premier Gypsy Jazz club, Le QuecumBar , she has worked with just about everyone by now and has seen them from every side of the stage. It was she who suggested we invite Lollo Meier who, frankly, I had never heard of. A quick visit to his website and a few more inquiries from people in the know convinced me that having Lollo would be a real treat and I’m so pleased he has agreed to join us this year for a clinic and concert. A Sinti himself, he has not just learned, but lived the Gypsy Jazz tradition in his native Holland alongside the likes of Fapy Lafertin and Stochelo Rosenberg. Please join us for this special opportunity to learn from and listen to one of Europe’s best contemporary GJ players in this, his first visit to the U.S."
