About Me

Nuova pagina 1

Jacopo Martini — born in Florence in 1975 — approached music when he was about twelve through an instrument, the violin, he has later left for devoting himself to the guitar.

From ’96 to ’98 Jacopo Martini studied at the Mascagni Institute in Leghorn under Flavio Cucchi’s guidance. Afterwards, at the Florence Academy of Music, he attended guitar and composition courses respectively directed by Alfonso Borghese (guitar) and Riccardo Riccardi (composition).

In ’99 Jacopo Martini moved to Rome for a short period. There he established a deep educational relationship with the guitarist Dario La Penna. Then he took part in several seminars with big musicians like Jim Hall, David Liebman, Barry Harris , Ralph Tonwer and Joe Diorio. In 2000, during a travel to France Jacopo Martini fell in love with the Music Manouche music, by playing and learning such a style directly from the gypsy guitarists of the northern area of France. From that time his way of playing has been deeply influenced by the gypsy phrasing, in particular by the characteristic expressiveness of Django Reinhardt, a very great — well-known by now — guitar genius.

At the same time Jacopo Martini began his own concert activity that first led him among the ranks of «Hot Club de Florence», an historical Florentine band. Soon after he started collaborating with jazz musicians of the Tuscan area, such as Alessandro Fabbri, Mirco Guerrini, Alessandro Dipuccio, Franco Nesti, Nico Gori, Barbara Casini, Piero Borri, Simone Santini, Alessandro Galati etc.

In 2003 Jacopo Martini worked alongside the singer Tiziana Ghiglioni and the violinist Emanuele Parrini (previously Jacopo’s companion for a long time in «Hot Club de Florence»): as soloist and composer, Jacopo Martini participated with Tiziana Ghiglione and Emanuele Parrini to the realization of the cd Rotella Variations, issued by Splash Records and judged worth of mentioning at the jazz music event Top Jazz 2003.

In addition, Jacopo Martini has recorded So long Flores, again with Tiziana Ghiglioni, for the same label along with weighty musicians: Tino Tracanna, Beppe Caruso, Riccardo Bianchi.

Up to now he has collaborated with the main representatives of the Italian and international jazz like Gianluigi Trovesi, Erico Rava, Stefano Cocco Cantini, Franco Cerri, Fabrizio Bosso, Claudio Fasoli, Lee Konitz, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Claudio Fasoli, Tiziano Tononi, Tino Tracanna, Alberto Tacchini, Matcho Winterstein. Gianni Coscia, Tito Mangialaia, Beppe Caruso. He cooperates steadily with the group of the percussionist Alfio Antico and performs an intense concert activity with groups in his name.

Caricato da django75 Martini sits at the top of his generations "A-List", players like Andreas Oberg and Stephane Wrembel who can stand toe-to-toe with their Gypsy contemporaries and speak their stylistic language. "I Nuvoli", his first foray into string swing, is one of the more progressive releases this year. He uses rearranged evergreen standards like "Sweet Georgia Brown", "Et Maintenant" and "Porto Cabello" to anchor his creative original compositions and arrangements, recored with a group of like-minded jazz professionals who are able to match his improvisational skill, technique and vision. In no way should this is be confused as a Django Tribute album, rather a legit jazz guitar release, by a young guitarist who is interested in pushing the boundaries. Always of interest to this writer is the rhythm section, featuring the dynamic rhythm of Francesco Federici; Matcho Winterstein's rhythmman and bassist Nicola Vernuccio who provide a tight and strong launchpad for Martini to do his thing. Reinier Voet, Jean-Philippe Watremez and Kamlo Barré fans take note, this ones for you!Ted Gottsegen
