The Honey Pot Fire Company #6 in Nanticoke, Pa hosts the event called "The Cabbage Roll”. The object of the cabbage roll is to roll a head of cabbage down a hill for the furthest distance. The hill is known as "Cabbage Hill" North Market Street in the Honey Pot Section of Nanticoke, Pa. Why Cabbage hill and Why Cabbage? Well the city of Nanticoke, Pa... At the turn of the century lies in the heart of the anthracite coal region. On Sundays a day of rest for many of the coal miners and their families ,they had picnics with their famlies.Many living in the Honey pot section of Nanticoke, with many living on top of cabbage hill and they had their gardens to supplement their incomes. It only takes a little imagination to put together ,a picnic and some kids with their parents a little beer on Sunday; cabbage in the garden and the idea of rolling a cheap bowling ball rolling down a hill. You get a good time of family fun and competion hence the start of what is known as the Cabbage Roll. In 2005 the Honey Pot Fire Company restarted this tradition as a not only a fund raiser for the Company in its long range goal of purchasing a new Fire Engine but a way of bring a community together and show some pride in community and to remember those that came before us.Our main Web Site http://mysite.verizon.net/vze7gr1v Alternate Web site: http://www.freewebs.com/cabbageroll07/The "Cabbage Roll" is open to all (very young and our older senior citizens) Children from zero to four have a choice of Brussels sprouts or cabbage to roll down the hill with all being winners in their own rights.Children’s Division is open to all kids 5 to ten with distance of the cabbage determining the winner.The Open Division is open to all above 10 to 110 years with distance of cabbage determining the winner.Cabbages can be brought from home or purchased on the hill but can not be wrapped; glued; frozen or altered to change it natural shape except for removal of loose leaves and to trim stem end of cabbage.
