The Rio is an independent, single screen cinema restored to its 1930s art deco splendour, and now with state of the art digital projector.
We're the only cinema left in Hackney.
A frequently changing programme of quality cinema from arthouse and foreign language to the very best of Hollywood, plus retrospective Sunday Matinee double bills, children's Saturday Morning Picture Club and holiday films, screenings for parents and babies, and Classic Matinee free films for the Over 60s. And keep your eyes peeled for special late night events, such as 1920s silent movies screened with a live electronic soundtrack.
The Rio also hosts and participates in a huge variety of film festivals, including the Turkish, Kurdish, International Gypsy, East End and London Children's film festivals, among others. The cinema has a cosy cafe with the best coffee around, along with homemade cakes and samosas and, of course, popcorn.
"It's like being inside a 1930's radio. THE place to spend a wet and miserable Sunday watching a retrospective matinee double-bill"
Tom Hunter, award-winning photographer and Hackney resident
