Bluescope Music, President, Scott Goldman announces the signing of former Evidence Music Recording Artist Clarence Spady to SEVERN RECORDS out of Severn, Maryland. The former W.C. Handy Nominee for Best New Artist '97 has been an underground marvel since his initial and only worldwide release "Nature of the Beast" in '96. He received international recognition as one of Living Blues Magazine's "Top 40 Blues Artist Under 40â€, and received the ’98 France Blues Trophie for Best International Blues Artist of the Year. Once described as "the future of the blues" by Bill Dahl, of the Chicago Tribune, his sound is now even more distinguishable.“He’ll never work in this town againâ€â€¦Buddy Fox, former talent buyer for the now defunct Manny’s Car Wash in New York City. This common outcry due to Clarence’s past misbehavior caused this incredible blues guitarist the stature granted to those with much less a unique and compelling musical talent. While other well known name acts were getting a pass for their professional indiscretions, Clarence was made to pay dearly for his. This explains why after such enormous success with his debut recording “Nature of the Beast†initially produced independently by Clarence’s manager, Scott Goldman, and later released by Evidence in 1996, Spady has not had a worldwide release in ten years since. After a long period of feet-dragging, Evidence decided not to pick up his option, and none of the other top blues and jazz labels in the industry would consider him. Not even the effect of an industry wide “blackballing†has stopped Clarence from writing and performing his music all over the world. Having played in Hong Kong, Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, and all parts of the U.S., his rapidly growing fan base is beginning to spread the word of his moving guitar play, rough street-edged vocals, songwriting and live improvisations.Born, Clarence Sloan Spady on July 1, 1961 in Paterson, NJ. Spady’s dad Clarence “Pops†Sr. moved the family to Scranton, PA in 1966 to a safer suburb and a secure job at the army depot.
But that didn’t stop the family from traveling to NJ every weekend to play with Clarence’s Uncle Fletchy’s R & B band. After his Aunt Bea found him playing “High Heeled Sneakers†on his father’s guitar backstage one night, Clarence was called upon to play his first professional gig at the age of 5 at the Elks Club. He’s been startling people with his immense god-given guitar playing ever since.
The Jazz Café in Hong Kong touted Clarence “ as a soulful singer and hot guitarist who takes the blues of BB King and Albert Collins, and mixes it with the soul of Ray Charles and some funk of James Brownâ€â€¦ The grass roots following that is building for Spady and awaiting his debut release on Severn Records will testify…†Once you've seen and heard Clarence, you know you've been witness to one of the great guitar players of our time. He plays with a depth & sensitivity that can’t be taught. Effortlessly, combining blues, jazz, funk, and rock ; the music seems to emanate from his soul, flow through his guitar, & encompass the audienceâ€. In short, Clarence is one of those artists that can actually move people. He brings out a range of emotions in you throughout his performances and recordings.Clarence continues to wow audience's all over the country….from his annual compelling and emotional benefit performances at Boulder Colorado’s Concert for Planet Earth to his regular appearances at NYC’s Terra Blues, at his home base in Pennsylvania at the River Street Jazz Café, or at a myriad of small jazz and blues clubs and festivals, he pushes forward writing and playing new music. And now finally through the great efforts and talent of our good friend David Earl and Severn Records the world can finally hear the magical sounds of Clarence Spady once again.
