When i was still a youngster i already was a music freak. I collected records and already did some not too serious DJ stuff in a youthcentre. In the 80's i met a fellow who was DJing in another youthcentre close to me. Later this fellow would become the infamous "Wipneus" from "Wipneus en Pim" fame, but in these days he was still a geezer into New Wave music. Because i had a lot of music i was given the chance to DJ in OJC Magnifiosi thanks to him, and from there things went very, very wrong.
I started out in 1991, and in 1994 i was given the opportunity to DJ at WYB at the Isle of Terschelling. In those days it was THE alternative hangout there (nowadays it is very Urban and top 40). I DJed there till 1997. The next year i also quit DJing at Magnifiosi, and after that i continued DJing at the LVC in Leiden, were i was a resident at the "Friday knights" dance-party. In those days i DJed under the name "DJ G-Spekk". Somehow i never get a cool DJ name. That was in 99/00.
In those days i played mostly alternative, and dance (as in Techno, Drum&bass, Hiphop and the likes). I used to be a big lover of EBM and Industrial in the 80's, but lost the connection somewhere in 1992. I refound that in 1998 at the Inrichting parties and started buying and collecting it again from that moment.
There was not much place for that kind of music at the parties i was already spinning, so i started a low profile goth/EBM night at Magnifiosi again. Somehow i got noticed, and MsPolyester, a well known goth/indus DJ around 2000 asked me to guest DJ at one of her parties. From there things went wrong again, and before i knew it i was spinning at the bigger goth and industrial parties in The Netherlands, and sometimes abroad as well.
Nowadays i hold a residency at the LVC for my own goth party "Freitag". I am also a resident on the "Cyberia" party at the EKKO in Utrecht, and a resident at the "The New Underground" party at the Willemeen in Arnhem. The last one is not goth, but alternative music in general.
I also guest DJ a lot at the big goth parties in The netherlands. Currently i also DJ at Fetish parties (Spinned at an edition of B.I.T.C.H. and currently Dominatrix)sometimes, and i even got to DJ the Wave-Gotik-Treffen, which is a dream come true for a goth/indus DJ.
As for the music i play:
I mostly play EBM, Industrial, Darkwave, Synthpop and Noise at parties, but it doesn't stop there. Since i started out as an alternative and dance DJ i also have a big expertise in styles like: New Wave, Electro(clash), Drum & bass, Techno, House, Hiphop, Rock, Breakbeat/bigbeat Alternative, IDM, Ambient and Indiepop. I also have lots of classics in Reggea, Funk, Disco, Soul. It is safe to say that i posses at least a few records in about every genre ever invented.
In general i like music with a "dark" twist, and the genre doesn't bother me that much. If the music is happy and shallow i will hate it. Gospel, Latin, R&B, Ballads, Trance, most top 40 i do not like.
I also like my music groove, and with a certain "pop" sense to it, though i mean something else than the standard definition of "pop". I think Haus Arafna is quite poppy for instance. Most people would disagree.
