La Mamoynia

BIOGRAPHY
Following the 2001 EP “Ola gri” and the album with the same title in 2004 came out La Mamoynia’s third studio album on 1st October 2005, entitled “Mono Ego”. The album was first presented to the German audience at a concert in Mannheim October 22nd 2005. La Mamoynia first formed in 1999. Seven years on, they continue to reinvent themselves; through different line ups, using different instruments and through band members swapping instruments with each other. These transformations were never deliberate, they simply happened as a part of band’s development and as a result of the search of their ever-changing style. Finally, the band came to their current line up: Dimitris Triantafyllou - vocals, Giuseppe Agosti - bass, programming and urban percussions, Omal - bass and programming and Antonio Scalvenzi - drums and urban percussions. Although usually recognised as “electro dark wave”, their sound has also been described as “avant electro punk” or even as “retro wave”. La Mamoynia are happy to be identified with each of these labels. Furthermore, they encourage different opinions about their music. Essentially, their sound was born as a mixture of two major elements: their diverse influences, often completely different to the sound they are producing (least of all depicted in their physical appearance) and their constant search of a music style that continues to develop from the early ‘90’s when La Mamoynia were formed. The latter inspired them to try not to use instruments other than the bass guitar (in the beginning there were three), to introduce the surplus, discarded appliances as percussions and also to use all knowledge gained from listening to Einstürzende Neubauten combined with utilising the new technologies of computer sampling. Incorporating all this, they believe that they have set up a foundation for their own distinct sound, already recognised as their own in many musical reviews. Obviously, this is not the end of their path. All of this is merely helping their driving force to continue their constant search for improvement; from one album to another, from one concert to another. What makes their tracks different performed live to the album versions is the way they express their emotions onstage; what takes them weeks of work in a studio, comes together in three and a half minutes onstage easily! This is the reason why their songs sound more “punk” than “darkwave” live. But they love the fact that their audience has the chance to get acquainted to the different aspect of their music through one song. Yes, almost certainly there is a bit of “punk rock” in all this. At the end of the day, La Mamoynia is in fact that little microbe that likes to gobble on decomposing stuff.
Il 1° ottobre 2005 è uscito il terzo lavoro in studio dei La Mamoynia, intitolato "Mono Ego", preceduto da un ep nel 2001 ("Ola Gri") e un album omonimo nel 2004. "Mono ego" è stato presentato ufficialmente con il concerto del 22 ottobre allo Juz di Mannheim (D). I La Mamoynia sono al loro settimo anno di attività (nascono ufficialmente nel 1999). Attraverso alcuni cambi di line up, di strumentazione e di ruoli interni (mai predisposti o progettati, ma frutto di una naturale evoluzione stilistica) sono arrivati alla formazione attuale: Dimitris Triantafyllou (voce), Giuseppe Agosti (basso, campionamenti e percussioni urbane), Omal (basso e campionamenti) e Antonio Scalvenzi (batteria e percussioni urbane). Il sound che il gruppo propone, anche se generalmente etichettato come "electro dark wave", è stato a più riprese descritto in svariati modi, dall' "avant electro punk" al "retro wave". Accettiamo di buon grado ogni descrizione. Ci piace pensare che persone diverse interpretino la nostra musica in modo diverso. "Materialmente" il suono dei La Mamoynia nasce dall'unione di due grandi elementi: le nostre molteplici influenze, che spesso non hanno minimamente a che vedere con quello che suoniamo(almeno in apparenza), e la ricerca musicale che portiamo avanti da sei anni; quest'ultima ci ha spinto a decidere di non usare altri strumenti che non fossero il basso (all'inizio ne venivano usati tre contemporaneamente), di introdurre elementi percussivi di scarto, prendendo a piene mani dalla lezione Neubauten, e di sfruttare le nuove tecnologie con l'introduzione di computer e campionamenti. Abbiamo unito il tutto e crediamo di aver raggiunto la base per poter definire il "nostro" stile, che gi¨? in parecchie recensioni viene riconosciuto. Naturalmente questo non è un punto di arrivo, ma è uno stimolo continuo, di album in album, di concerto in concerto. Cio che differenzia le nostre canzoni da "album" dalle versioni dal vivo è l'esternazione del fervore che sentiamo dentro di noi durante le performance live: in tre minuti e mezzo esplode ciò che per la produzione dell'album ha richiesto settimane di avoro!! Per questo aggrediamo i nostri pezzi, che finiscono così per suonare più "punk" che "darkwave". Ma questo ci piace. Ci piace che una persona possa conoscere di noi diversi aspetti, attraverso la stessa canzone. Si, probabilmente c'è del punk in tutto questo. In fondo "Mamoynia" è quell'insetto che si nutre di roba marcia...
