THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWLEDGE OF SELF
Over 100 years ago, Mr. Booker T. Washington recognized the critical role knowledge of self plays in the upliftment of any one person or ‘race’ of people. On page 36 of his autobiography Up From Slavery, Mr. Washington explicitly states “[t]he influence of ancestry . . . is important in helping forward any individual or race.” European Americans can fully appreciate Mr. Washington’s statement as they have realized the influence of their ancestry, which has played an important role in forwarding their culture or race. In fact, the ancestry of the European Americans as presented in any American classroom has reaped an intoxicating benefit of empowerment to the European American as the negative aspects of their history have been filtered out and the positive aspects exaggerated. The current stupendous financial, social and political positions of European Americans are a direct result of them receiving a very biased knowledge of themselves through the education system. The benefit of the Europeans’ knowledge of himself is magnified as their education persistently glorifies their past conquests and accomplishments while nonchalantly concealing major embarrassments, especially the time in history when Europeans were dominated by others.
On the other hand, or on the other side of the tracks, there is the African American. African Americans have been operating with a severe handicap as they have been trying to forward their race for hundreds of years without full knowledge of their ancestry. It is impossible for any African American who depends solely on the education system for knowledge of themselves to realize the positive influence of their ancestry in forwarding their culture or race. Unlike their European counterparts, African Americans do not have the luxury of a curriculum that consistently highlights their momentous historical accomplishments while tactfully concealing the historical low-points of their culture. In fact African Americans have the exact opposite, a curriculum that specifically concentrates on every low period in the history of African Americans and people of African descent and tactfully ignores their numerous majestic historical periods. Unlike European Americans, African Americans have not realized the psychological benefit of the persistent glorification of their culture through the American education curriculum. The aggregate positive aspects of African history are barely mentioned, nevertheless glorified. Some positive achievements of individual Africans and African Americans may have been mentioned during Black History month, but the glorification of African culture as a whole is absent.
In order to even the proverbial playing field, both European Americans and African Americans need to be taught the true and full history of all people. All sides of all stories must be equally stressed in the classroom. To promote equality among the races, both the positive and negative aspects of European and African history must be presented in an equal manner. That is not the situation today. Today’s education focuses on the positive aspects of European history and the negative of African history which gives the false impression that Europeans are better than Africans. That false impression, among other factors, has caused huge financial, social and political gaps between black and white people.
