My cousin Jeff was a drummer in his high school band; and after he let me try out his drum set, I was hooked. Lack of money to buy a drum set and parental resistance to the idea, led me to begin by practicing on cardboard boxes with a pair of sticks I made (from dowel rods), in my high school shop class. Eventually, I got a practice pad and spent as much time as I could playing along with cd’s, tapes, and the radio. Self-instruction has been the basis of my drumming education–nothing formal. ____________________________________________________________ ______ In 1991 (straight out of high school), I entered the military and was stationed at Homestead AFB, Florida. I attended my first Rush concert at Miami Arena. The experience was inspiring enough to drive me to purchase my first drum set–a black, four piece, Mapex Mars Series kit. In hindsight, I now realize that they sounded much like the cardboard boxes I started out with. Nevertheless I practiced frequently and began jamming with other musicians I knew in the military, and a band in Miami. ____________________________________________________________ ______ In 1992 Hurricane Andrew quickly changed things and I was transferred to Moody AFB, Georgia, as a direct result. It was there that I met my friend Randy, a bass player. He and I played in the Moody AFB Talent Show with our band Alloy Injection, which won first place in its category for playing the Metallica song “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” At this point I began to play regular gigs with rock cover bands One Sick Puppy, Whitewater, and a couple of country bands. Whitewater gigs were cool, considering that Guitarist Steve Holland of Molly Hatchet would occasionally play with us. I also sat in regularly at local open mike sessions, and with my friend Steve's band. ____________________________________________________________ ______ I left the military in 1995 and moved to the St. Louis area where I picked up with an original southern/roots rock band called Peach Crate. We recorded eight songs on an album called “Special Handling” and had another unfinished studio project before the band fell apart. We landed the song “On Your Own” on a compilation CD for the 5th annual St. Louis Regional Music Showcase in 1997, which included 36 bands out of the 100 that were selected to perform from around the mid-west region. We also performed live on a local cable access television show called Velocity. For about a year, I played and recorded with the St. Louis original psych-o-billy band The Trip Daddys. Many of The Trip Daddys gigs were openers for larger headlining acts such as: Bill Kirchin (author of the “Hot Rod Lincolon” song), BR 549, Kim Lenz and Her Jaguars, Dash Rip Rock, The Frantic Flattops, The Twistin’ Tarantulas, The Blue Moon Boys, and NIL8. Occasionally I would play in Springfield, Illinois and Louisville, Kentucky with The Trip Daddys, besides just playing St. Louis area dates. ____________________________________________________________ _______In late 1998 I moved to Waterloo, Illinois, and after a year-or-so break from playing in bands, I began playing rock covers and originals with a band called Forged. Later I spent two years playing top 40 rock covers with Dr. No, during which time I met my wife Rachel and her two sons. My daughter came along in late 2003, and so I took another break from live performance. ____________________________________________________________ _______ Since August of 2006, I have been playing with a rock n’ roll cover band called Moe Cash, and I am working on writing and recording some original, alternative country/roots rock music of my own. ____________________________________________________________ _______My personal influences include Neil Peart of Rush, John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, Lars Ulrich of Metallica, Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Carter Beauford of The Dave Matthews Band, Matt Cameron of Soundgarden, Stewart Copeland of The Police, Jeff Sipe a.k.a. Apt. Q258 of Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit, Barry Smith of Soulhat, and many of the musicians I have worked with or had the chance to learn from. ____________________________________________________________ _______My favorite bands are Rush, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Pantera, Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit, Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Wilco, Foo Fighters, The Bottle Rockets, Split Lip Rayfield, The Allman Brothers, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Dave Matthews Band, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Tool, The Police, Soulhat, Queens of the Stone Age, Neil Young, Faith No More, Black Sabbath, old Guns and Roses, The Black Crowes, The Beatles, The Who, Live, Dokken, Jethro Tull, Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, System of a Down, and The Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies, just to name a few. ____________________________________________________________ _______The music I have played includes influences in part or entirely of rock, metal, blues, country, jazz, rock-a-billy and punk. I also play some guitar, bass, and sing. ____________________________________________________________ _______I currently play on two different drum kits. One is a Pearl Masters Custom set and the other is a vintage Ludwig set. I use either a Ludwig snare or sometimes a Mapex. The cymbals I use are all Zildjians.
