About Me

This is the ***OFFICIAL "ANGELS OF VENICE" MY SPACE PAGE*** managed by Carol Tatum, Harpist/Composer/Producer for Angels Of Venice and sometimes by my assistant because I'm swamped!THANKS FOR VISITING my new page. It was created 8/4/06.
(Please note that I cannot access www.myspace.com/angelsofvenice even though I "own" it (long, boring story). So, this will be the official "Angels Of Venice MySpace Page" until the problem gets corrected).
Okay, here we go...yes, I'm going to promote but I ALSO REALLY WANT TO MAKE THIS PAGE PERSONAL & INTIMATE. That's what I've decided I love about "MySpace."
MY HISTORY: I was born in Dallas, Texas and my heritage is German/English/a little Scotch-Irish and I'm 1/32nd Cherokee Indian. My grandmother was the church librarian for Highland Park Methodist Church in Dallas and my grandfather was in real estate and publishing.
When I was four years old, my sister and I used to waltz around my grandmother's living room to STRAUSS WALTZES and I liked to create TWO-PART HARMONIES for my sister and I for Christmas carols that we sung in the back seat of the car. When I was five years old, I SAW MY FIRST LIVE BAND play "Green Onions" by The GTO's and "got all goat eyed" and was forever changed. Then, one evening my Dad took me to a jazz nightclub called Romie's in Dallas - WHICH WAS FORBIDDEN because I was only five! - but they let me come in and I witnessed the "cool scene" and the EXCELLENT MUSICIANS IMPACTED MY TINY BRAIN. My grandfather owned what I think was a jumbo body Guild and kept it under his bed. I used to pull out that guitar and place it flat on my lap and try to play. It hurt my fingers badly but I persisted! I'VE BEEN PLAYING MUSIC SINCE I WAS SIX YEARS OLD, starting on PIANO and then switching to ACOUSTIC GUITAR at seven, which was my main instrument for...forever! At age eight, my Dad also bought me a pair of BONGOS, thus my life long love affair with PERCUSSION. By fourth grade, my sister and I owned an ACOUSTIC FOLK GUITAR, a 12 STRING FOLK GUITAR, a SPANISH GUITAR and a PIANO. Our Mom bought them for us - what a great mom! Music then became my permanent best friend. We moved from Dallas to Long Beach/Belmont Shore and in junior high, I heard Hamza el Din, Ravi Shankar and Jihad Racy and was forever changed. And THEN I heard JIMI HENDRIX and the song "Manic Depression" and I FREAKED OUT because if I had ever taken acid, I thought that that song is what it must have felt like! (I thinks drugs are bad for you, by the way). Then,
I HAD THE MOST DEFINING MOMENT MUSICALLY IN MY LIFE EVER...
My boyfriend bought me LED ZEPPELIN's first album and I was totally and utterly FOREVER CHANGED because the music reflected so closely what I "looked like" inside. BLACK SABBATH'S first album was also a big influence and I FREAKED OUT when I heard the tolling church bell on "Black Sabbath." By the way, I'm going to do a cover of "Embryo" on my 2008 medieval CD. I continued playing guitar and then at age 18, I bought a MANDOLIN for 75. and learned Zeppelin's "Battle Of Evermore." At age 21, my Dad bought me a GIBSON SG and a FENDER AMP and I learned more Zeppelin songs, like "Black Dog", and started writing my own songs. I worked full time while I put myself through college. I went to college seven years (LBCC then Cal State Long Beach) earning an A.S. and majoring in Biology. I wanted to be a doctor (when I was six I had a guitar and a microscope) but music was still stoking it's fierce fire beneath my skin. I played ELECTRIC GUITAR and played for several male bands and then started my own band and played the L.A. club scene (Whiskey, Troubadour, etc.). Lenny Wolf from the band KINGDOM COME saw my band at the now-defunct club FM Station (N. Hollywood) and asked me to write lyrics for his band on Polydor Records. I then became a published writer and an ASCAP member. Tired of guitar, I then switched to MANDOLIN full time and then to HARP. I added HAMMERED DULCIMER (the instrument in the photo) after seeing it at the NAMM show many years ago. It sounds like a santoor (Persian dulcimer) and I love santoor and I LOVE PERSIAN, ARABIC, EAST INDIAN MUSIC and MEDIEVAL MUSIC of all cultures. (I did a pretty darn good cover of George Harrison's "WITHIN YOU WITHOUT YOU" on my Windham Hill CD with cellos, hammered dulcimer, percusion, etc.). I also play OCTAVE MANDOLIN (see my main picture). I released my first group album (ANGELS OF VENICE) in 1991 which was HARP, FLUTE & CELLO neo-chamber music. Out of a natural evolution, added my WORLD MUSIC influences (percussion, oud, etc.) to the harp, cello, flute and violin. In 1996, I released "Awake Inside A Dream" and "Lionheart" is from that CD. I signed to WINDHAM HILL RECORDS in 1999 and released one album and was on 13 compilation CDs and toured the U.S. Windham Hill submitted my album for a GRAMMY NOMINATION.

I was happy to have a record deal but - YIKES! - felt uncomfortable on a new age label! I'm too dark for their demographic! (And when I say "dark", I mean as in MYSTICAL, HAUNTING, etc., not evil). My father, a bongo and alto sax player, worked for MCA RECORDS for nine years and warned me not to sign a record deal but I proceeded even though I knew the "inside info" about labels from an early age and knew I'd better get a nice advance (which I did)! I was confused when Windham Hill telephoned me and offered me a record deal but I thought perhaps they were finally becoming more progressive...alas, they were not. But at least I got to be a label mate of the wonderfully talented Michael Hedges (R.I.P.). To continue, I released two more CDs: CD#4 "Music For Harp" and CD#5 "Sanctus."
I now own Trine Records and release "Angels Of Venice" and "Carol Tatum" CDs through Trine. AOV is distributed in the U.S. by Projekt Records (Sam Rosenthal of Black Tape For A Blue Girl). Sam is great and actually pays invoices on time. AOV is also licensed by Accession Records/Germany (for Europe), owned by Adrian Hates of the band Diary Of Dreams. Adrian is also great and we have had a very positive business relationship for many years.
I have now come full circle and will be playing electric guitar on my new 2008 CD along with cello, world percussion, hammered dulcimer, CHARLES EDWARD on vocals, etc. Charles sounds like a cross between Peter Steel (TYPE O NEGATIVE), Jeff Tate (QUEENSRYCHE) and BRIAN FERRY. This CD will just happen to appeal to many audiences: ROCK, WORLD, TRIBAL & TRIBAL FUSION, GOTHIC, INDUSTRIAL, TRANCE, ELECTRONIC, etc., but that's because I'm just being myself as you can see!
With that said...WHAT DO I LOVE??? Music, music and more music! (Back to music again!) Love to make albums! Love to compose and produce and create a REALLY well-arranged song. Have 5 CDs with 6th one on the way. It will be TRIBAL/WORLD/GOTH/ROCK, good for BELLY DANCING, GOTH CLUBS and ROCK RADIO, and I'm doing a cover of ZEPPELIN'S "FRIENDS" plus Jeramiah Soto from SOLACE will be the percussionist - luv him!! (see his "Solace" pic below and his websites are: www.myspace.com/soundsofsolace AND www.eventidemusicproductions.com) - and my long-time violinist ERIC GORFAIN (who toured with the "PAGE/PLANT" tour) and CATHY BIAGINI ..o and SUE WINSBERG on alto flute and also special guests artists such as my cousin GARY MYRICK doing a slide guitar solo. I'm ecstatic to have a friend of mine do vocals: CHARLES EDWARD, from the industrial goth band SERAPHIM SHOCK (www.seraphimshock.com or just click on Charles's pic (the second "friends space" pic below). With Charles I've finally found an excellent male vocalist, one I have been looking for for a long, long time. Be sure to check out his band and MySpace page. WARNING: he is not for the faint of heart! The new CD will once again be produced by my long-time producer, FLORIAN AMMON, known for his work with RAMMSTEIN, VAN HALEN, QUINCY JONES, MARIAH CAREY, ROCCO DE LUCA, etc.
THIS IS WHAT THE SANCTUARY IN MY MIND LOOKS LIKE:

BADLANDS(above)playing the wonderful song "Winter's Call" ~ If ZEPPELIN was a biker band, they would be BADLANDS. Love the outro of this song. R.I.P. Ray Gillan (vocals) ~ what a terrible, terrible loss for the rock world...what a voice...what a hunk! Eric Singer (drums) now plays for KISS. Jake E. Lee, one of my all time fav. guitarists. Greg Chaisson (bass) moved back to Phoenix and still plays bass (NOT DRUMS! HA, HA!) and has a lovely family. BADLANDS ~ a blues based hard rock SUPERGROUP that would only release three great albums. What a shame, what a shame...

Gary's song "She Talks In Stereo" was in the movie "Valley Girl" and he also co-wrote the Grammy winning album "No Brakes" with vocalist John Waite ("Missing You"). Gary will be playing a guitar solo on a song from my upcoming 2007 CD.
ALICE IN CHAINS (above), another one of my all time favorite bands performing "Them Bones." Jerry Cantrell's guitar tone is to die for! :::wishing she had her '52 Les Paul Gold Top back and her 1960s 50 watt Marshall half stack back...:::
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS (above) ~ Intense, moody, artsy, powerful ~ my kind of band! From Zeppelin to STP, I love everything about this band: Crunchy guitars, AWESOME songwriting, Scott's vocals...what's not to love?! Last time I saw Scott he was in Taco Bell in Toluca Lake by the movie studios. Ted and I were eating lunch and saw Scott come in. No one recognized him but us. Ted called him over and he told us he was in the studio no doubt recording Velvet Revolver's second CD. He's really a nice person. I've run into him several times, at The Roxy and at a performance of "Miss Saigon" in downtown L.A. when he was with his first wife. I think Scott is one of the best rock vocalists of the last 20 years.

UPDATE AS OF 4/8/08: Two things: 1) Check out my blog about spending time with The De Leo Brothers of STONE TEMPLE PILOTS this past Monday night; and, 2) After much consideration, Charles and I have decided to add another song to the upcoming new CD. It will be a second cover song, a cool, sexy song that is hooky and just wonderful and begging to be recorded with a modern arrangement, which I have done. Charles will be laying down his vocals in May right after SERAPHIM SHOCK'S show at Bar Sinister/Hollywood May 31st. Flo (my engineer) has to fit us in between The De Leo Brothers and Rocco de Luca. I hoping for an August release now so wish us luck. Cheers, everyone! Just found this: Check out a CNN article on the Houdini Mansion STP party/concert which mentions Ted (my boyfriend) three times: http://marquee.blogs.cnn.com/2008/04/09/magic-at-the-stone-t emple-pilots-reunion/

UPDATE AS OF 2/18/08: Whew! My "down time" isn't down time at all anymore! Plus, after New Year's, I got the flu but as of this week I'm back doing "mix fixes" for the upcoming new CD "ANCIENT DELERIUM." Delays are a drag but they were all legitimate. Plus, quality takes time and the new CD will definitely be worth the wait. Love To All! ~ Carol Tatum

UPDATE AS OF 10/2/07: Wouldn't you know it! Right in the middle of trying to finish the CD, I have to stop and do TAXES! Not fair! I've post-poned my photoshoot because I don't want to have "tax angst" on my face while shooting the photos! On a better note, I recorded the wonderful female vocalist Tal B (she's on YouTube in a video with Run DMC). She is doing powerful east Indian vocalizations and improv on Song #9 and she is delightful! She and I even did middle eastern bedouin calls and had a blast in the studio, laughing and cracking up because we sounded so good together and had so much fun. Flo and I have to arrange and mix her vocals and then we can master ~ yeah! Meanwhile, Charles is doing his photoshoot and the graphic artist I've chosen for the CD booklet is the amazing Crystal (who is also DJ Catalyst Echo and spins goth here in L.A.). I'm very happy to have her at the helm guiding the artwork and anticipate great looking graphics. New release date? Unknown but will now be in 2008 due to delays beyond my control with Flo's schedule, etc. It's okay! Quality takes time. : ) ~Carol Tatum

UPDATE AS OF 9/5/07: Nine final mixes and one to go! ~ Carol Tatum
UPDATE AS OF 6/30/07: Charles Edward (the vocalist) just left back to Denver a few days ago. He laid down vocals to the final two songs for the new CD, one of which is Led Zeppelin's "Friends" and to say I am pleased is an understatment. Charles did a fantastic job on all the songs and for those of you who are SERAPHIM SHOCK fans, you will get to see a side of Charles you've never seen before and one that I am SURE you will love. I just recorded a top notch session oboe player yesterday for a song called "Courtesan Suite" and his playing was simply divine and, well, perfect. I have a few more players to record and then we finally mix! I don't have a release date yet but it will be by late Summer or early Fall. Recording always takes longer than you think and quality takes time. I know everyone thinks this about their new "baby," but I feel this will be my best CD ever. And since I'm back to playing electric guitar again, I feel I've come "full circle", from acoustic guitar to electric guitar to mandolin to harp and now back to acoustic and electric guitar. A Perfect Circle! Take care everyone. ~Carol Tatum

NEW CD DESCRIPTION: My new 2008 CD will sound like an off-shoot of "The Sins Of Salome" (song #2 below) and "Queen Of The Sun" (song #3 below) so have a listen, especially all you beautiful belly dancers! "Sins Of Salome" is on Jeramiah Soto's "Strange Flesh" gothic belly dance compilation CD and Jeramiah will also be a guest drummer along with Seraphim Shock vocalist Charles Edward and Page/Plant violinist Eric Gorfain. Christina Linhardt's angelic, clear soprano will grace several songs. I'll also be working again with my long-time (10+ years) mix/engineer, the fabulous Florian ("Go With The Flo") Ammon, who has worked with Van Halen, Rammstein, Quincy Jones, Mariah Carey, LL Cool J, Rocco de Luca and more. This 2007 CD will have an amazing team of talent! Plus, I've pulled my electric guitar out of the closet and will be wailing on a track or two.

By the way, this page is pretty long...because I have a lot to say!

I Love Music. I'm sooooo tempted to say I'm more musician than woman but I like high heels too much! I love Ted & my family & animals & classical & medieval music & music composition/arrangement/recording & belly dance & real estate & clothes/shoes/jewelry/makeup & massages & antiques & exotic home decor & Starbucks & Daphne's Greek Cafe & more...so much more...

I'd like to meet:

BELIEFS: My beliefs? Gnostic/Cathar/Buddist/Christian hybrid. I'd love to play harp in heaven once I get there. I love religious history and archeology so much. I wanted to be an archeologist when I was in 4th grade (and a race car driver).

I'D LIKE TO MEET: Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Belgian painter M. Fernand Khnopff, Pre-Raphaelite painter John Waterhouse, Belgian painter Jean Delville, Beethoven, Grieg (ah, Grieg... :::sighs:::), Bach...especially Bach!, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant (I dedicated the song on this page "Lionheart" to both of them - it's from my 2nd CD "Awake Inside A Dream" - it's one of my best songs), Jimi Hendrix, Ramses The Great, Hatshepsut, Ahkenaten, Aristotle, Einstein, Kepler, Paramahansa Yogananda, Rumi, Joseph Campbell, Edgar Cayce, Sir Thomas More, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Elizabeth I, Saladin, Prof. W. W. Tatum, all of my relatives back to the Dark Ages, the Plantagenets and the Montegues and the Angevins, Hildegard von Bingen, King Alfonso the Wise, Charlemagne, Countess Beatriz de Dia, Joan D'Arc, Stephen Hawking, Alexander The Great, William Shakespeare, J. R. R. Tolkien, Poet W. B. Yeats, Lord Byron (I think!), Henry David Thoreau, Manley Palmer Hall, all of our Founding Fathers and Freemasons (MY GRANDFATHER WAS A MASON AND A MEMBER OF THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR), all my relatives that ever extisted, Jimmy Carter, ..ary filmmaker Bram Roos (R.I.P.), Director Ridley Scott - I did a charity gig with Stephen Stills and tried to meet him but he wouldn't give me the time of day, the jerk... :::chuckles::: What I'd really like (my fantasy) is to meet all of the genuinely good, kind, nice people out there living in the world and have a killer catered party in a lush forest with music and massages for everyone and give everyone a harp to learn to play and then run through an English maze and whoever finds the center of the maze gets a five carat emerald and a little box that, when you open it up, it says that all the pain and suffering and war and tragedy in the world is forever gone!I LIKE PRE-RAPHAELITE IMAGRY:

You scored as Angel. Angel: Angels are the guardians of all things, from the smallest ant to the tallest tree. They give inspiration, love, hope, and positive emotion. They live among humans without being seen. They are the good in all things, and if you feel alone, don't fear. They are always watching. Often times they merely stand by, whispering into the ears of those who feel lost. They would love nothing more then to reveal themselves, but in today's society, this would bring havoc and many unneeded questions. Give thanks to all things beautiful, for you are an Angel.

What Mythological Creature are you? (Cool Pics!)
created with QuizFarm.com

I edited my profile with Thomas’ Myspace Editor V3.6 !

What Mythical Creature Best Represents You? (Pretty Pics)
You are most like the WEREWOLF! The werewolf, perhaps the most misunderstood mythological being, is often mistaken for dark, evil, accursed beings of only the worst nightmares. But there is the many other sides of the story. Some see them as creatures of free-will, therefor are neutral on the subject. While others see them as wolves only bigger, smart, loyal creatures. Yet in nearly every story they are described as mysterious and cunning. You are just that, mysterious, cunning, smart and loyal.

1950s movies such as The Innocents (Debra Kerr), The Dark Angel (with Peter O'Toole), Cleopatra (Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton), Ulysses with Kirk Douglas, the Sinbad movies, all the "sword & sandals" movies from that time, in fact, the scenes where the harem girls are dancing for the sultan inspire me to write soundtrack music (an example will be on my new CD).

Wayne is doing a documentary on "Doctors Without Borders" in Ethiopia and he asked me if he could use Angels Of Venice music for it!
