About Me

A brief history of the Bewick's Jam Night
The Jam Night was started by the band "Night Rider", an excellent band who unfortunately are no more. Their drummer, Billy Legend, was also drummer for Marc Bolans "T Rex". Billy also designed the world famous Malibu motif.
It was a struggle in the early days with audience numbers of around ten, but they gradually went up. Credit goes to John Green, landlord of The Swan who seeing how keen we were to make a success of the evening was willing to pay for bar staff, heating and lighting.
We struggled to find bands to perform as host bands. £1.50 entrance times ten meant the band would get £15 for their performance. Thanks to bands such as The Proof and Dirty Work Blues Band who supported us in our early days.
Our numbers are now growing, and we are getting a good reputation for good music with bands like the Junkyard Aliens , Groove Doctors and the Iain Terry Band .
Thanks for all your support.
Many famous artists have performed at the Bewick's Suite
Just some of the artists include;
David Bowie (under his real name David Jones),
Billy Legend (Drummer in Marc Bolans T Rex),
The Equals (No. 1 in July 1968 with "Baby Come Back"),
Desmond Dekker & The Aces (No. 1 in April 1969 with "The Israelites"),
Eddy Grant (vocalist with The Equals),
The Marmalade (No. 1 in January 1969 with Ob La Di Ob La Da),
Nashville Teens (Tobacco Road),
Crazy World of Arthur Brown (No. 1 in August 1968 with Fire),
Jimmy McCulloch (Guitarist with Wings),
Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers (Got to get you in my life).
Joe Cocker was book to play at The Swan when his single "With a little help from my friends" reached number 1 in November 1968 and he still honoured the booking.
Radio London , the pirate radio station, used The Swan as one of it's venues for a regular Sunday programme "The Down Beat Club".
THE JAM SESSION IS FOR ALL MUSICIANS! You do not have to have the same musical genre as the host band on any particular night
Come along, put your name on the play list, be called up and play or sing or both!

Band Members: Potential host bands
It's recommended that you come down to the jam night one evening have a jam and a word with the jam organizer about a potential host spot or visit the website for more info
Influences: The Bewick Suite is a great live music venue and private function hall situated behind The Swan Hotel (pub), in Maldon Essex.
The hall holds about 150 people, there is a proper stage area with stage lighting, a sprung wooden dance floor, and of course a bar area (with a good selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks).
The jam nights are held every Wednesday night from 8.00pm till 11.00pm. The format of the evening is a host band will typically perform a 45 minute set starting at 9.00pm, after this the stage is given over to any jammers who wish to get up and play, whether they are solo artists or even full bands, if individual artists require backing then either the host band will back them or we will form an impromptu band from the audience.
Jammers are requested to bring their own instruments with them (except drums provided by host band) but not any amplification as this will be provided.
Jammers will get to perform two or three songs depending on how many jammers there are on the night, the host band will finish off the evening after the jam section. The are different musical themes each week for the jam nights i.e. Rock’n’Roll, Blues, Covers, Acoustic, Soul, Rock, so check the gig list to see who is hosting each week and the style of music they will be playing, so you will be able to maximise your enjoyment of the evening by attending on a night that suits your musical taste’s.
