The HotClubPg experience started in the fall of 2005, which is a shame, given that the two founding members, guitar players MÃ¥ns Persson and Dominic Sell had already known each other for about 3 years. Apparently, other musical projects, university and girlfriends kept them from hooking up, both musically and mentally.
Once they had freed themselves and decided to play together they tried various different styles from funk to Standard Jazz. Yet, it wasn’t until they were introduced to the music of French Gipsy Jazz Genius Django Reinhardt that they really connected. From that point on Måns and Dom started playing seriously, often practicing up to 10 hours a day. In that period the seed for a beautiful friendship was planted and cautiously cultivated through their playing. Prior to the day-view gig of what was to become the HotClubPG they played long nights in the city center of Perugia introducing people to the powerful yet so gentle music of gipsy jazz.
After the first concert at Caffé Morlacchi in Perugia they went on to play venues such as the LOOP Café, the “Circolo Mearivolutionae†in San Sepolcro (Tuscany), and a weekly gig during the summer at La Terrazza, not to speak of various birthday parties and weddings in and out of town. By that time they were looking for a double bass and one sunny day found one that went by the name of Ludwig. Ludwig looked great for a bass but was lacking serious playing skills so he teamed up with Luigi Gioia who happened to be a bass player and joined the band.
From that point on the HotClub really started to rock the old Etruscan walls in Perugia and Umbria with their trademark “sum sapp sum sapp†beat and expanded their repertoire from Gipsy Classics and Jazz Standards to Bossa and French Musette Waltzes. By then they were playing every Saturday night at Caffé’ Morlacchi hosting other Jazz Cats such as the incredible Dan Kinzelman on clarinet and Giacomo "Giacobazzi" Tosti on accordion.
