About Me

What is Alaskas hottest export? No, its not oil, its Emma Hill. The 19 year old singer songwriter has burst on to the national scene with her debut solo release, Just me. This 12 track introspective record has something for everyone. Raised in the wilds of Alaska, in a village of 100, she had little else to do than listen to her parents record collection. The influences of Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, and Neil Young can be heard coming through in her own unique style.
After relocating to Portland Oregon in the fall of 2006, she has been taking the west coast by storm with constant touring. Her mix of folk, americana, alt country, jazz, and blues with a touch of pop sensibility has been resonating well with listeners, and comes through strong on her first solo album Just Me. Dont miss out on one of Americas fastest rising singer songwriters.

"We aren’t quite sure if its her sweet voice or flawless guitar playing but the two combined sure can please. Emma Hill, from Portland, OR (no we aren’t biased towards PDX, there are just some seriously good bands there) seems to have a great individual combination of talent vocally and rhythmically. The first track we heard “Just Me” sounds like it came from the heart and direct right through the soul of Emma’s mother - we just listen to it over and over here and can’t wait to hear more." -MusicLog (www.musiclog.com)

[ASTOUNDING VOCAL SONGWRITING] "Her voice makes me want to fall in love," a friend said after first hearing Emma Hill sing. It was exactly what I'd been thinking: I'd never heard so astonishingly gorgeous a voice. The Anchorage transplant is doing her singer-songwriter thing with Down South Sallie, whose mouth is equally impressive for totally different reasons. How does Billie Holiday's voice come out of that little white girl's body? Is she possessed? Maybe that's why Sallie sings, "Yes, I've got a heart as cold as stone/ But, hon, I make a damn fine bone," so confidently but also gets blushy between songs. "We cry when our talented young musicians leave us for Seattle or Portland, but we swell with pride when they return all grown up, as performers, artists, and humans. Emma Hill is the latests departure-but the Valley girl returns from Portland this week with her guitar and folk songs, ready to win us back." -Alaska Daily News

"Hill has the lungs. She's occasionally stunned crowds into startled silence -- in a good way. Some compare her to Joni Mitchell or Joan Baez, quite a compliment for her, those being two of her biggest influences."-Alaska Daily News (Artist of the Week. "Emma’s voice is breathtaking, having that classic quality that leaves her listeners with a sense of the passion she must feel while she’s singing."-Make A Scene! Magazine!

"Emma Hill has found her voice like never before in Just Me, her debut solo release. Emma approaches her music with the same melancholy reminiscent treatment to her songs, while offering something quite new. As always, her lyrics are haunting, touching and beautiful. In "Untouchables", she sings: "Well I gotta get something/And this is all I've got/ Don't tell me what I am/ Just tell me what I'm not/ Darling.""Blankets" is a reprise to her Pennies and Patches debut. Emma's double vocal production style is the perfect treat to the ears. Also quite noticeable is her evolved guitar playing style, dealing great power and grace to an already well accomplished performing presence. Again a very playful yet serious approach in her lyrics as she muses: "Where'd you go I ask/ You're hiding in the blankets./ I hope that's as far as you ever go.""Follow Me" has a nice blend of guitar, piano, and upright bass to accompany the rich sound of Emma's breathy, soulful voice." -Josh Cole from The Frontiersman

"Well-crafted, sweetly flavored folk tunes aren't the only aspect that puts Hill at the front of the pack in her genre. From what I can tell, she's also a hell of a hard worker."..."Hill is toward the front of the line" -Mike Bookey of The Source Weekly
************************************************************ ***************
"Today, you can hear that influence in Hill’s songs, which lilt along in a folk-singer manner, twangy but with a tinge of jazz and blues influence, and carried mostly by her beautiful, smoky voice. She sounds like a rootsier Sarah McLachlan, or perhaps like fellow Alaskan Jewel, but with more soul."-Ben Salmon of The Bulletin

[SINGER-SONGWRITER] Emma Hill is not afraid to sing. In fact, her voice's countrified richness, delicate inflections and fear-no-range transitions make it easy to imagine that's all she ever does. An Alaskan transplant whose name is occasionally dropped alongside Jenny Lewis' (Hill once played in a duo with Lewis' little sis), 19-year-old Hill writes songs that are refreshingly honest—if a little melodramatic. Take the title track to her full-length debut, Just Me: Lyrics like "I've got a brother/ He goes to school/ He's on the right path and follows all the rules/ That ain't me...I don't know where I'm goin'/ I don't know why" smack of Hill's age, but her skill in delivering them—and her knack with bubbly melodies and bright acoustic picking (see "Wrong Side of Town")—makes up for any juvenile leanings. And, hey, most singers-in-progress would love to have hints of Chan Marshall and Neko Case in their croon at age 19. AMY MCCULLOUGH
