"It is not power that corrupts but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it."
- Aung San Suu Kyi
human(and animal;]) rights activists of all varieties!
U2's "Walk On" is about and dedicated to Aung San Suu Kyi. The multi-artist 2004 compilation album For The Lady, features "Walk On", this was banned by the junta(the ruling "political party" of Burma). During Vertigo Tour concerts in London and Glasgow (June 19 and June 21 2005 respectively), U2 dedicated performances of "Running to Stand Still" to Aung San Suu Kyi. Other artists such as the Black Eyed Peas, Coldplay, Damien Rice, and R.E.M. have also publicly supported Aung San Suu Kyi's cause. She features prominently in the music video for Rice's collaboration with Lisa Hannigan, "Unplayed Piano", which was apparently written for Suu Kyi.In 2003's MTV Europe Music Awards, she was given the "Free Your Mind" award.

"I think by now I have made it fairly clear that I am not very happy with the word "hope." I don't believe in people just hoping. We work for what we want. I always say that one has no right to hope without endeavor, so we work to try and bring about the situation that is necessary for the country, and we are confident that we will get to the negotiation table at one time or another. This is the way all such situations pan out-- even with the most truculent dictator."
