With extensive experience and success in the world of jazz performance and with an increasing reputation as a composer, it is not surprising that Tyler Summers was recently named Rising Star by the National Jazz Awards. A graduate of the University of North Texas, Summers boasts an impressive musical resume.
While attending North Texas, Summers held the postion of lead saxophonist for Grammy Award winners One O’Clock Lab Band, recording both Lab 2002 and Lab 2003 during that time. With the group, Summers performed internationally with renowned artists Chris Potter, Bob Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider, Dick Oatts, and Tom “Bones†Malone (Letterman Orchestra, Saturday Night Live). In 2006, Summers toured Canada with award-winning country recording artist Johnny Reid, performing on the national CBC broadcast of the Canadian Country Music Awards. The Tyler Summers Trio has performed throughout both Canada and the United States, including the International Jazz Educators Conference in 2003.
Compositionally, his work can be heard on One O’Clock Lab Band’s Lab 2003, The Paul Tynan Quartet’s Freedom and Jealousy, Trinity by the Tyler Summers Trio, and Stockton Helbing’s Lodestar. Tyler released his debut solo singer-songwriter album Along For the Ride, which he wrote and produced himself, on Maxwell Records in 2006.
In 1998, Tyler was named Yamaha Rising Star of Canada and in 2002, Downbeat’s Outstanding College Soloist. In May 2006, he received a Canada Council Grant to move to New York City, where he currently resides.
