Roswell Park’s Breast Center located at Elm and Carlton St. in Buffalo, N.Y. isdedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and care of breast cancer patients. The centerprovides patients with resources, research information, and treatment options related tobreast cancer. In 2003, the program expanded its efforts to St. Mary’s Hospital inLewiston. Statistics now indicate that 1 in 8 women will be effected by breast cancer atone point in their lives. A smaller number of men are at risk as well. It is also the secondleading cause of death in US women. Many strides and advances have been made in boththe early detection and subsequent treatment for breast cancer patients. Continued studiesand Research, just within the last 10-12 years, have greatly reduced the risk of recurrenceand have given thousands of women and men diagnosed with breast cancer new hope fora bright future. With greater concentration on pinpointing its cause and developing a cure, perhaps thenext generation will no longer needlessly have to be concerned about the risk of breastcancer. The entire community is invited to support this worthy cause. For furtherinformation contact the F.M.F.B.C. benefit coordinator, Ms. Goeckel [email protected]

Band Members: Founder and Organizer-Ida Goeckel, Coordinator- Margaret Freiert, 2003-2005 Coordinator-the late and great Neil Kelleher-August 8, 1959-Feb. 26, 2006.Ida Goeckel is a local bass player and DCIS breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed in 2003. During her ordeal, she was given a second chance, hope, and compassionate care at the nation's first comprehensive cancer center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, in Buffalo, N.Y. Since that time, she remains cancer free and devoted to showing her gratitude by coordinating the only Western N.Y. music benefit to help raise funds for the Roswell Breast Care Center and Resource Center. Her primary mission is to make sure that other cancer patients and their families receive the same quality care that she did. It is also to develop a sisterhood/brotherhood among all breast cancer survivors and supporters. Her secondary goal is to showcase talented local female musicians and use their music as the universal language to bring supporters of this cause together.
Influences: Spurred by similar events in 2003 called Bass Babes Battling Breast Cancer, coordinated by Janielle Ramierez in Austin, Texas. Also, check out this web site to learn about a very interesting study on musicians and breast cancer called the Life and Livlihood Study: http://musiciansurvivor.org
Sounds Like: All performing bands include at least one female member.
