About Me

Since Nathalie wrote her first song aged 14 – ”Between Sheets”, which eventually ended up on her debut album “Hush Hush” – Nathalie Nordnes has displayed an extraordinary and unique musical talent. She composed, arranged and recorded her debut album Hush Hush before she reached 18, and her second album “Join Me In The Park” showed that Nathalie within two years had refined her talent. When “Hush Hush” was released in 2002, the then 18 year old Nathalie Nordnes demonstrated an amazing talent for mixing catchy pop tunes with smooth jazz moods. One reviewer looked into his crystal ball, and ended up with this prophecy: “After a few releases she will bloom, but I'm not sure if we're talking about a Joni Mitchell flower or Radka Toneff flower”.
“Hush Hush” eventually went gold in Norway, but just as Nathalie's comforting and subtle music, her success came without hype and pop hysteria. The album spent all together 19 weeks on the Norwegian album chart – very impressive for a Norwegian debutant – with a modest number 8 as top position. Nathalie's career was not launched to great fanfares and heavy marketing, but by pure musical quality and the always so reliable word-of-mouth.
If there is one constant factor in the music industry, it must be that success by word-of-mouth makes for long, steady careers.
Looking back, Nathalie is happy that she took such good time with the start phase of her career, after Norwegian music journalists named her everything from the next Norah Jones to the new Laura Nyro.
- I wasn't thrown into the music business, the way which happens to many artists. That kept me from getting scared by what happened, even though I was overwhelmed. The fact that “Hush Hush” sold steadily and never caused the biggest fuzz, made it all the more comfortable, Nathalie says two years after her debut album.
Two years and richer on experiences, "Join me in the park" left little doubt that Nathalie had taken giant steps as a songwriter. Listening to the single “Cars And Boys”, it is easy to think of the delicate and immediately catchy pop tunes from French acts such as Phoenix and Air. Nathalie herself mentions Brasilian bossanova acts Milton Nacimento og Caetano Veloso, while the grand old lady of Tennessee has been an important influence.
- I've listened a lot to Dolly Parton's recent blue grass albums, “The Grass Is Blue” and “Little Sparrow”. She is amazing at telling stories through her songs, Nathalie says.
The albums have been produced by Hans Petter Gundersen and Kato Ådland. The duo runs Gjøa Studio in Bergen, and has produced hit albums for local artists such as Sondre Lerche, Julian Berntzen, Sergeant Petter and Real Ones.
Nathalie is currently working on her album number three, which will be produced in March in Italy. Stay tuned for new songs and news!
