You got to be a Spirit....don't be no ghost!!

About Me

Pick up a copy of my book (& one for a friend)!!
What would you play when you see the chord symbols A7b9, F7+5, Csusb9 or DbMaj7+5? What would you blow over a D Locrian Sharp 2? What are next week's Lottery numbers!?
The Melodic Minor Handbook provides musicians, of all levels, with these answers (except for the Lottery nos., unfortunately) in presenting a comprehensive yet concise, practical yet easy to absorb method of exposure, study and practice in the components of Melodic Minor Harmony, and its use within the Jazz vocabulary.
Available from WWW.JAZZBOOKS.COM or wherever Aebersold books are sold.
CHECK OUT SOME AUDIO EXAMPLES from the "Melodic Minor Handbook" on the MyPod mp3 player below.
Track 1 presents selected MIDI examples of Melodic Minor ii-V-i sequences, patterns & exercises from Chapter 3, ascending chromatically thru the keys, exactly as they appear in the book (where each excercise is presented in all 12 keys).
On Track 2, I play phrases on tenor using ideas from the material found in Chapter 3 and elsewhere in the book, over pieces of Aebersold Play-Along Vol. 3, "The ii-V-I Progression" around the cycle of 5ths. This creates more of a real world feel and hopefully a more musical impression of one of the many ways in which the material in this book can be studied and used in your everyday playing situations!

Bobby Stern Bobby Stern is a professional, contemporary saxophonist who has mastered both the accoustic, as well as digital mediums of musical creation.
As a powerful soloist on tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones, as well as the Akai Electronic Woodwind Instrument ( EWI ), along with his intimate knowledge of production he is constantly exploring combinations of old with new, resulting in a fresh, personal approach to musical expression.
Born to a musical family, (which includes sister, singer Jennifer Rush) and raised in New York, Bobby was constantly surrounded by all types of music, but it was not until his late teens after attending the High School of Music and Art in NYC and beginning saxophone studies with noted teacher Joe Allard, that he considered music as a vocation.
By that time he had moved with his family to Germany. There, he eventually received his first recording contract, which led to the formation of the group "Head, Heart & Hands", an Afro Caribbean Jazz ensemble which became quite popular; appearing throughout much of Europe. Noted German jazz journalist, the late Joachim E. Behrendt, said of a young Bobby Stern, "....he has the bite and aggresivity of the best soloists in jazz....".
Bobby has subsequently performed and recorded with many major jazz and pop artists, among them Marvin Gaye, Thad Jones, Joe Perry, Tete Montoliou, Jennifer Rush, Stevie Woods to name only a few, as well as with a number of his own fine groups.
Returning to New York, Bobby spent most of his time freelancing, writing and producing. His CD, "Ten to 2", on his own Human Bean label, featured Bobby exclusively on the Akai E W I.
In recent years, he has spent his time between Europe & the U.S. and has recently authored “The Melodic Minor Handbook: A Jazz Player’s Perspective” published and distributed by Jamey Aebersold Jazz (www.jazzbooks.com), the revised edition available in Dec. 2006 (see above).
Bobby is currently focusing his energy on his pianoless group, “The Bobby Stern Rough Jazz Trio”, and is available for clinics, workshops & teaching positions worldwide. He currently spends much of his time in Mallorca, Spain.
Bobby Stern is a worldwide endorser for Keilwerth Saxophones as well as Bari Reeds & Mouthpieces.
