Gymnastics is considered a type of play therapy, and some occupational therapists believe that gymnastics stimulates essential elements of motor skill development, muscle strength and memory, as well as promotes the retention progress of finely tuned motor skills. Many elements of gymnastics also promote vestibular and proprioceptive sensory stimulation. The environment at Atlanta Gymnastics Center encourages the retention of both verbal and non-verbal communication and the development and improvement of social interaction, while focusing on acquiring basic gymnastics skills.
Special consideration is made throughout the class to promote social skills, sensory integration, eye contact, coordination and any other special modifications needed to meet the needs of each participant. Students are challenged to engage through the use of Floor Time, while still absorbing the benefits gymnastics offers to children on the Autism Spectrum in a fun and positive environment. Our ultimate goal is to teach basic gymnastics skills, while improving the child’s physical well-being, self-esteem, and overall ability to interact with others.
