About Me

DJ BALANCE

DJ Balance (aka Bizcuts) began his DJ career shortly after finishing high school, but his interest in hip hop and music began much earlier than that. In fact, before he owned turntables, he owned a rhyme book, and he can remember writing rhymes over the Peter Piper break off his Run DMC tape. After attending several clubs (as an under-age patron), he finally understood the important and central role that a DJ plays in the culture, and he decided to start collecting records.
DJ Balance started out by learning to blend records of various genres, and landed a few gigs in coffee shops and small bars. Since then he has done many shows, club residencies, and parties. He has performed at events with artists such as KRS 1, Kid Koala, J-Rocc, Shortkut, Z-Trip, DJ Craze, GZA, Hieroglyphics, OC, Cocoa Brovas, Wu-Tang Clan, Buckshot, Supastition, Phife, DJ T-Rock, Aesop Rock, the Perceptionists, and others. He is also known for bringing his turntables out to the parks and spending the day spinning for the b-boys and b-girls.
In 1999, after he had made many guest appearances alongside a local celebrity named The Big Boss Groove on Tampa's community radio station 88.5 WMNF, Balance hosted his own show called the "Turntablist Broadcast". The show's play list consisted of an eclectic blend of hip hop, funky instrumentals, and turntablism. The radio station remains by far the best and most diverse station in the greater Tampa Bay area.
In June of 2001, Balance joined a group with two exceptional emcees named Surreal and Synapse 9. The group was named Double Helix, and the trio created hip hop music with soulful, original lyrics, boom-bap style beats, and precise scratch choruses. They became known not only for giving audiences a great live show, but also having the ability to translate that vibe to CD or vinyl with great effectiveness. Double Helix released a highly sought-after 12" single and an album called "Soundproof", both of which feature production by DJ Balance and Surreal. Double Helix received numerous awards in The Weekly Planet, including "Best Local CD" and "Best Hip Hop Act". The highly respected paper also named Double Helix as one of the "21 Southeastern Bands to Watch" in their list printed on April 20 2004.
Surreal and DJ Balance are working on a new EP with Marco Polo, a producer-extraordinaire from Brooklyn (www.marcopolobeats.com), and DJ Linx, an extremely talented DJ who hails from Toronto and hosts the Mixtape Massacre on 88.1 FM. Together they are known as the Average White Band, or "AWB". The AWB project should be released sometime in 2006, and will feature guest appearances by Wordsworth, Supastition, Chip Fu, and others.
Surreal and DJ Balance have also been working on a new project called Future Classic. The EP features production from Ohmega Watts, moO the Beatfanatic, Kero One, DJ Kay, Surreal, DJ Balance, Marco Polo, and others. The EP will be released on the HipHop Is Music imprint and will be available in July 2006. Visit www.soulkitchensound.com for information on the Future Classic project.
