About Me

Get Your Own! | View Slideshow
A veteran of hip-hop, DJ Step1 hit the ground running in 2005 with a contest-winning mix on KDAY Radio in Los Angeles. In 2007, Step1 and Shortee collaborated on Bikini Wax, the first battle record ever produced exclusively by female DJs.
During the course of her DJ career, Step1 has spun at clubs and parties in Southern California, produced scratch choruses for several hip-hop artists, and appeared at events like the Winter Music Conference and NAMM tradeshow. Step1 is featured on the Females Wit Funk web site, and she’s a part of a crew with fellow female turntablists Shortee, Annalyze, Tyra from Saigon, and Supra.
For over twenty years, DJ Step1 has been immersed in hip-hop. She was the professor of a course called Writing about Hip-Hop at Florida State University, and she published a web site about the history of hip-hop culture in 2001.
A lifelong dancer, b-girl and music aficionado, Step1 made the inevitable and natural progression to DJ. She uses her vast knowledge to deliver hard hitting mixes, like the recent Back in the Day mix, which features the funk breaks that spawned rap music, old-school hip-hop classics, booty-shakin’ electro tracks, and elements of turntablism.
Keep your eye on Step1 as she continues to rock parties and bring the realest hip-hop and turntablism your way!
