From a sound system background, mainly playing to rare groove, soul and hip hop crowd, as open minded music lovers, in the late 80’s, the chaotic, mesmerising yet friendly vibe of acid house drew us in as it did many others. The breakbeat era soon took hold of us fully with artists such as Fast Eddie and Tyree Cooper merging the acid house with the beats that we had loved as part of the hip hop generation. We must have liked it – we started buying tunes! There were various pirate stations around which gave us inspiration to focus our Djing in a different direction. Mainly practising in our bedrooms, the break came when an advert came on for a new radio station by the name of Innocence FM advertising for DJ’s. We had enough tunes now, so we thought up a name and sent a demo. And that was where the Brainkilllers were born! There, we met up with an old schoolfriend of DJ Unknown who turned out to be a major influence throughout the whole of our DJ/producing career, Lewi Cifer aka. DJ Lewi (can’t big you up enough mate)!!! After holding down a regular Saturday evening slot (got to mention Pepsi & Red Alert) we wanted to create a style that would be unique to the Brainkillers (enter the Fearless MC)! He was an old school friend of Apache’s, regularly penning lyrics in his spare time and just waiting to be unleashed onto the scene. Our show began to build up a good following and coincided with us joining a DJ agency (Big up Colin & Gary!) who got us regular bookings in Manchester, Blackpool, Wales & the Isle of Wight. We also managed to negotiate a residency on a night called the “Time Tunnel†at Slammers in Gravesend (RIP Charlie, can’t forget DJ Vibes) where we were first introduced to Funky Flirt. Innocence were eventually taken off of the airwaves and Flirt (where would we be without him) managed to secure us an early morning slot on Weekend Rush (maximum respect goes out to Dicer, Vitamin, Bobby, Arnie, Cas who made it what it was). We put out heads down and got on with it – soon the hard work paid off and were moved to a prime time slot on Sunday evenings between Flirt/SL and Red Ant/Marley Marl (big up), so the pressure was on for us to perform. Luckily, we befriended a number of DJs & MCs on the station who we drew inspiration from and naturally integrated with (Remarc (Da Amen Don), Rusher/Fox, Flirt/SL, Red Ant/Marl, Digital/X-Man, Rude Boy Keith, Sparxx, Brocks/Spanner, Fire/Uno, Spice, Outlaw/DM Cut, Krome/Time, X-Rated Crew, Shockin, Shabba, Gaffer, Dollars, IC3) as we all had our own unique style. As we became more known, the work started coming in from that side (Thunder & Joy, Telepathy, Life & Utopia, Wax Club, Jungle Dawn etc.). We played at the 1992 Carnival (original Bassmasters Andy, Warren, Ian & Sean, Sharkeye ur chest – RIP Henry) – we still regard these as our best times!! During this time, we flirted with production putting out a few tracks on the Vibe Alive record label, then. We remained faithful to the Weekend Rush and decided to again to venture into the production side of things, this time hooking up with Kemet/Third Party Productions (Mark/James, can’t forget you) and went on to produce some material which we hope had an impact on the scene e.g. Screwface (Lewi, your chest!!) In 1995, the radio station which had given us a platform to perform/promote ourselves went off air and we hung up our record bags for good (or so we thought). RIP Weekend Rush! Fast forward 10 years - after houses were bought and children born – Mr T (another school friend – big up Brettenham Jnrs) asked us to do a guest show on Origin 95.1FM. We did, then again about 6 months later and a couple more times during the year. Mr T finally talked some sense into us and we now have a regular Sunday night slot between 8-10pm. We were lucky enough to be on Rush at its height, but we also know that we were links in the chain and if we touched or inspired just one person, then JOB DONE!! We wanna big up all the radio stations and their DJs & MCs from past & present – we’re all pushing for the same thing, to educate people about the music which we love!!AND THAT’S IT – SO NOW YOU KNOW!!
