About Me

INTRO: Hi there. Thanks for stopping by. Basically I'm a shy person, but I do love to share my feelings and thoughts about most creative things. ARTY THINGS: Art bubbled to the surface first as a hobby and then became a full-time devotion in mid-2003. (I had dabbled in drawing and watercolour as a teen, and architectural drawing later on). I'm also experimenting with mosaics using found objects at the moment. WORDY THINGS: Before this, I was in the field of journalism and was honoured to interview many unique and larger-than-life personalities whose hearts and visions often proved to be larger than their celebrity. Another satisfying experience was seeing my long-simmered manuscript "Living on Velvet" become published in 2000 under the nom de plume Clarisse D'Marchand. CYBER LIT/ART: Currently, I edit and contribute to the art and literary newsletter "The Empress", which can be viewed at www.empressbooks.com (Kind thanks to my webmaster Bart Hawkins Kreps {a former editor under whom I worked freelance at The Independent newspaper based in Brighton, Ontario} for maintaining the Empress Books site.)My artwork can also be viewed at www.empressbooks.com. WHO IS THE EMPRESS ON THE EMPRESS BOOKS SITE? The sepia logo image on the homepage of www.empressbooks.com is a peacock head-dressed Gloria Swanson from a dream sequence in the old black and white silent film "Male and Female". I have this great classic in my own collection, among other silent films. EBAY ARTY/JEWELLERY/HEALTH AND BEAUTY THINGS: To view my art/jewellery/other handcrafted items offered for sale on eBay, my eBay user ID is "theroseofroseneath". My latest interest is in fragrance crafting and I love making unusual exotic oils, soaps and other scented products. Most frequently, the fragrances I've come up with using essential oils are influenced by and reminiscent of my "hippy" 1970s -- funky, cool scents with patchouli, frangipani, frankincense, myrrh, and sandalwood. Like, just totally cool.

I'd like to meet:

EXCELLENT ENERGY: Relevant people with relevant ideas who would make the world a more relevant place -- which means living for today, not yesterday's mistakes or tomorrow's worries. People who have found peace and meaning in their lives. Artistic people. Kind people. People who will stop to smell roses and roadside daisies. Unpretentious people. People who believe old dogs can learn new tricks. People who know how to relax. People who do not judge but simply love instead. As for specific people I would like to meet, if you are real and truly genuine, that would be nice.... EXCELLENT LOVE: I have been in love 3 whole times in my life. I married the 2nd one for forever and for true. EXCELLENT ENVIRONMENT: We are proponents of renewable energy and resources and currently offset some of our electricity consumption by using PV solar panels to power some circuits in our home, and we also supplement our water heating with a solar water heating system. Not only do we save on our electric bills, we are also helping our planet become a greener and happier place. We have the highest recommendations for Generation Solar based in Peterborough (www.generationsolar.com), who helped us with our energy plans. EXCELLENT EVERYDAY: We love Christmas year-round, and we keep our Christmas tree up all the time in the basement rec room. It's just a festive reminder to keep all those good feelings around no matter the season. A MOST EXCELLENT "WHO ARE YOU?" SERENITY/FIREFLY SURVEY: My results:
I am Zoe Washburne (Second-in-command) Zoe Washburne (Second-in-command) 95% Dependable and trustworthy.
You love your significant other and
you are a tough cookie when in a conflict.

You just gotta love the timeless songs "Mexican Radio" and "Drive, She Said"). Have lately been back into 1990s electronica with tres cool SWAINS and their '93 CD Sonic Mind Junction.(If you don't have Sonic Mind Junction by SWAINS -- GET IT -- trust me!) Also Sonik Boom of Love's "A Supreme Love" and "Boom Shock" CDs. Also: Fraser & Debolt's LP that has "Gypsy Solitaire" and "Dance Hall Girls" on it. Tonto's Expanding Headband, Rush (their concert DVD "Rush in Rio" is phenomenal!!!), Robert Plant (his "Mighty ReArranger" CD is dynamite, and also the "UNLEDDED DVD" with Jimmy Page -- super live performance of "The Battle of Evermore" and a wow video for "Most High"), Led Zeppelin (the new 2 DVD set is super, and "In the Evening" and "Kashmir" are INCREDIBLE at the 1979 Knebworth concert), Golden Earring (LOVE the video for "When the Lady Smiles"), The Beatles, Paul Revere and the Raiders featuring Mark Lindsay ~ too many favourites to list only a few! (Mark ~ also known as Madman Marcus and who's famous for such hits as "Let Me", "Just Like Me", "Good Thing" and "Hungry" ~~ is now host of "Mark Lindsay's Rock & Roll Cafe" on K-Hits radio out of Oregon), The Spencer Davis Group, Kalan Porter, classical music, opera, operetta, tribal (as in juju Tarzan 1930s -- hey where do you think soul, funk and R & B came from?)I also have an extensive collection of music from the late 1920s and 1930s. My latest 21st century fave song to exercise to is "I Like to Move It" by Sacha Baron Cohen from the "Madagascar" soundtrack.

Television:

Firefly (the best sci-fi-western series ever made, and the 4-DVD 14 episode boxed set is loaded with great extras), and any TV show with Nathan Fillion. CSI Miami is my current fave show. Also: Navy CIS, ER, LOST, Surface (please PLEASE bring that show back!), The Fifth Estate, E-Talk Daily, Law & Order: Criminal Intent (because of classy and cool Chris Noth), classic comedy serials, classic sci-fi series Star Trek, Lost in Space, Babylon Five, Quantum Leap, Dragon's Den

Phantom of the Opera (I have been reading this book for 6 years, one page at a time when I have a spare moment, and plan to reread it in the future). Vanity Fair (magazine). Art books. I also collect books on the Russian-Jewish master artist Marc Chagall.

Heroes:

My favourite since 2002 has been Captain Mal Reynolds (as portrayed by Canadian actor Nathan Fillion) of the Firefly TV series/Serenity movie; this theatre-trained actor gave the role everything and can be compared to Gary Cooper in stature and talent. Nathan is currently working on a project with British artist Martin Firrell about what real heroism is; check out http://www.martinfirrell.com/supersecretthingy.html Scaramouche is another hero of mine. (The film character as played by Stewart Granger in the classic film of the same name, not the Toronto fine dining place.) Stanley Kubrick. My artist father and copper-etching artist grandfather. My mother-in-law, Nina; God rest her gentle soul. My husband, who is the other half of my heart.
