About Me

The mission of the Rainforest Foundation is to support indigenous and traditional people of the world's rainforests in their efforts to protect their environment and fulfill their rights by assisting them in:
* Securing and controlling the natural resources necessary for their long term well being and managing these resources in ways which do not harm their environment, violate their culture or compromise their future; and
* Developing the means to protect their individual and collective rights and to obtain, shape and control basic services from the state.
The Rainforest Foundation was one of the first organizations to focus on the vital link between preserving rainforests and supporting the rights of indigenous and traditional peoples who call the rainforests home and have protected them for millennia. The "rights-based forestry" approach sets the nature of the Rainforest Foundations' work apart from most other rainforest and environmental organizations.

My Interests

Rainforest Foundation-US's work falls into four thematic areas - Land Tenure, Rights, Environment and Sustainable Economic Development.Within these areas, RF-US provides project-related grants and direct technical assistance to indigenous and local partners in the Amazon. Projects are aimed at fulfilling specific local priorities - such as mapping land for demarcation, lobbying for stronger rights legislation or developing land management plans - while, at the same time, strengthening indigenous institutions' ability to advance their own agendas.

I'd like to meet:

Joenia Batista de Carvalho, Reebok Human Rights Award winner and Brazil’s first female indigenous lawyer is head council for long standing Rainforest Foundation partner the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR).

In April 2005, the indigenous area of Raposa Serra do Sol (above) was finally ratified after a 30-year fight. Now with legal title to their lands, Joenia and the indigenous peoples of Raposa Serra do Sol are working to preserve their homeland for the next generation.
