Top Northwest DJs and MCs will be mixing it up at BumbershootBy Tina PotterfSeattle Times staff reporter 8/28/03---www.seattletimes.com---Stan Ragaza's initiation into the realm of turntables and "scratching," B-Boys and freestyle came vicariously through the work of Jam Master Jay, the late DJ of hip-hop icon Run-DMC.It was as a fifth grader that Ragaza saw footage of the masterful DJ go to town on a turntable, mixing up records to create an original style of music like nothing he had heard before."I saw him scratching and it amazed me how he could make a sound off a record," said Ragaza. "It inspired me to get into DJ and scratching."Within a couple years he was trying it out himself, experimenting with his mother's record player."I took a record and put a needle on it and moved it back and forth and I was amazed at the sounds that came out," said Ragaza, who now goes by the moniker of DJ Tre.For Ragaza, the art of DJing is a full-time passion that he expresses at competitions, or battles, and the occasional nightclub or weekend party gig. (DJ Tre spins Sat.Nights at Element in Seattle.)Ragaza is one of eight DJs who will compete at the Battle of Bumbershoot DJ/MC competition from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Exhibition Hall at Seattle Center. Also on the bill is a rapper battle, featuring the top eight MCs who competed earlier this month at a preliminary contest. The DJs battling it out in addition to Tre are Dyce, Waystylez, E-Fade, Rise, Smerk, Rayzer and Wundrkut. On the MC front it's Bishop, Onry Ozzborn, H-Bomb, Surge Spitable, Logic, Insane, Maniak B and Xnrtik. img src="http://www.dmcworld.com/technics/archive/2004/images/pr izes/1stprize.jpg"
