Hot Steamy Sax

About Me

I'm a sax player. I dig funk, r&b, rock, pop, "classical," stuff from all over the world and jazz of all kinds from the old school straight through to the new hipness. I live in NJ pretty close to New York, I just finished a cruise gig, and I'm trying to get that cake so I don't have to do another one. I've played behind lots of people in many styles; I've sat in orchestras like the Garden State Philharmonic, I've played with hip new pop, hip-hop, rock, gospel and funk bands like Katie Locke's band and the Will Champlin Band, and jammed with some heavy hitters like George Benson, Russell Malone, Sam Kininger and Steve Turre. I do copywork, and have done charts and arrangements for Jason Chase, Will Champlin, and Kristian Habenicht among others, and interned at Grimaldi Music Service in Fords, NJ, where they do charts, arrangements, production, transcription and other contract work (www.grimaldimusic.com). I dig martial arts, some xbox action and I'm pretty much a jam session/live music junkie. If I'm not playing, I want to be where the real heavy cats are playing. Also, I mess around and make tracks on my computer like the ones posted here. I'll post some newer stuff soon. I work with Reason, Logic, Finale, Abelton Live, and Cubase.

Kenny G vs. Norah Jones

Why would the labels drop "real jazz" for "smooth jazz?" Who says Norah Jones is jazz, anyway? If jazz players bothered to understand or even create an audience, we wouldn't be having this conversatio...

Don't Put Another Nail In The Coffin

My main concern with jazz education in the current era is that we are not teaching our students that the music is relevant to them. Sure, enrollment is up in jazz programs across the country, but if ...

Who wants a little Jazz Fo Dat Azz?

So Wednesday I went to the city to check out some kids I used to know in college. I knew what J4DA was all about, but the energy they put up was intense! This group mixes hip-hop/R&B and jazz in a v...

Improving the music: what are your goals?

Ever since, and in fact before I began playing music, "Jazz was dead." The death knell had been sounded long before I was born, and rings loud and clear today. These days, jazz education is explodin...

Teaching

My latest project is a series of workshops I've put together to teach kids about saxophone technique, improvisation and how to practice. I think there's a lot of conflicting information out there, and...

So, here's the rundown. I've just put up a demo of smooth jazz stuff. A couple of tracks are things I did with Gary Oleyar, a guy I do these smooth gigs with. He made the tracks and played guitar, ...
